There are said to be about 3.9 billion women in the world.
The average shoulder width is about 45 centimeters.
Since the circumference of the Earth is roughly 40,075 kilometers, if all of them were to stand side by side, the line would wrap around the planet about forty-four times.
Because they wouldn’t all fit in a single loop, they’d have to line up in a spiral—like thread wound around a spool.
And that brings up another problem.
The Earth is a sphere, so the radius of the spiral gets smaller as it winds outward.
That means the number of turns must be greater than forty-four.
If we use the entire surface of the Earth and calculate carefully, it seems that with a spiral pitch of about 290 kilometers, the total comes to sixty-nine turns.
Well, it wouldn’t really work—most of the planet is ocean, after all.
Still, if I were to start at one end of that “spiral of women” and walk all the way to the other, looking at each of them as I passed,
I wonder how many times I’d fall in love at first sight.
