## Chapter 1: Not Too High

The clock in the shopping arcade read 6:42.

The sky had begun to brighten, but the lights under the arcade were still on, their white glow falling evenly across the row of closed shutters. Makoto Mizuno walked down the street with a friend, holding a small recorder in front of his chest.

Through the earphones, the shopping arcade before him sounded slightly different.

The low engine noise of a truck that had turned somewhere in the distance came closer between the buildings. It grew louder, then slowly moved off to the right after passing the intersection.

On the recorder’s screen, two level meters rose and fell with the engine. The green bars reached about halfway up, with a wide area of the display still above them.

“Couldn’t you turn that up a little?” said the friend walking beside him.

Mizuno removed one of the earphones.

“What?”

“The recording level. The meters aren’t going anywhere near the top. Wouldn’t it be a waste to record everything that low?”

His friend’s point was not hard to understand. If Mizuno raised the input, distant sounds and quiet voices would be recorded more clearly.

He put a finger on the input dial but did not turn it.

“Big sounds can come out of nowhere on this street.”

“It’s quiet now.”

“Now it is.”

In front of them, the shutter of an old coffee shop began to move.

A dry click came as the lock released, followed by the metal slats lifting. The joints between them folded one after another, and a low vibration spread up to the roof of the arcade.

Mizuno put the earphone back in. The shutter sounded thicker through the earphones than it had without them. Beneath the vibration, he could even hear dishes faintly rattling inside the shop.

A man who appeared to be the owner pushed the shutter upward with his back bent. When the last section rose, another man came out of the darkness inside. They exchanged a brief greeting, but when the ventilation fan started, their low voices were quickly buried under its low rush of air.

The red indicator on the record button was still lit.

At the far end of the arcade, a bicycle brake gave a short squeak. A bicycle loaded with newspapers came closer, and each time its front wheel crossed a seam in the tiles, small impacts came at regular intervals.

The deliveryman passed the two of them and stopped in front of a shop several doors down. A bound stack of newspapers was lifted from the rear rack and set on the ground. It made a low, dull sound.

“Is that the kind of thing you came to record?”

Mizuno thought for a moment.

“That too.”

“The sound of the newspapers hitting the ground?”

“Not just the newspapers. What comes before and after them too.”

When the deliveryman returned to the bicycle, the kickstand came up, one pedal turned once, and then the tires began to move.

Taken by itself, the instant the newspapers hit the ground was nothing more than an impact. The sound of the bicycle approaching came before it. The sound of the deliveryman heading toward the next shop remained after it. Mizuno wanted to listen again when a recording included what came before and after, rather than isolating a single sound.

“What do you use it for?”

“Nothing in particular, so far.”

“You don’t use it?”

“I listen sometimes.”

His friend laughed.

“That’s a strange hobby.”

Mizuno did not deny it.

He did not release the recordings as works, nor did he have any plans to use them in videos. He saved the audio files with the date and location attached.

A station square as rain began to fall. An underground mall after closing. An evening park after the children had gone. A market before opening. The inside of a coffee shop, cups touching saucers.

He wanted to preserve something. But if someone asked what, he could not name just one thing, any more than he could single out the sound of the newspapers.

As they neared the center of the arcade, the sounds of shops preparing to open grew more numerous. Shutters, locks, carts, cardboard boxes, and greetings between workers came from different shops and overlapped beneath the arcade.

None of them was a special sound on its own. As one shop after another opened for business, the entire street was moving into a different time.

A woman came out of the prepared-food shop on the right carrying a metal signboard.

She opened the sign’s legs, but one side would not lock into place. As she tried to set it up again, the sign slipped from her hands and one of its metal corners struck the tiles.

A sharp sound shot through the arcade.

Mizuno’s finger moved reflexively to the input dial, but the sound was already over. The level meters had shot upward, the green bars jumping into the yellow and beyond.

The bars had not reached the red indicator at the very top.

The woman from the shop looked around and bowed to no one in particular. A cart that had stopped began moving again, and the sounds of opening preparations returned to the street.

His friend leaned over to look at the recorder in Mizuno’s hands.

“That was loud.”

Mizuno stopped the recording. The waveform on the screen had one tall peak, its tip still within the display frame.

“That’s why I don’t want to turn it up too high.”

“What if you’d turned it up earlier?”

“That part probably would’ve clipped.”

“Even though everything else would be louder?”

“Everything else, yeah.”

Mizuno played the recording back from the beginning and handed one of the earphones to his friend.

The distant truck approached. The coffee shop shutter rose, and the stack of newspapers hit the ground. The workers’ voices disappeared into the ventilation fan, and then the metal sign fell.

It was loud, but it was not distorted.

They could hear the hard strike of the metal corner against the tiles separately from the board’s delayed vibration. Behind it, even the wheels of a cart that had stopped short and the sound of the woman’s shoe taking one step were still there.

His friend removed the earphone.

“You can hear a lot more in this than you could standing there.”

Mizuno saved the audio file. The date and time appeared on the screen.

“I thought it was quiet.”

His friend looked down the street as he spoke.

More people had begun to enter the arcade, and smells drifted from the shops that had opened. Oil was heating in the prepared-food shop, and the smell of coffee came from the coffee shop.

Mizuno put the recorder in his jacket pocket.

During its quieter hours, the street could suddenly make a loud sound. When he began recording, there was no way to know when that sound would come.

Because he did not know, he did not turn everything up from the beginning.

Before switching off the screen, he looked once more at the waveform from a moment ago.

A little space remained above the tall peak.

商店街の時計は、六時四十二分を示していた。

空は明るくなり始めていたが、アーケードの照明はまだ点いており、白い光が閉じたシャッターの列を均等に照らしている。水野誠は小型のレコーダーを胸の前に持ち、通りを友人と歩いていた。

イヤホンを通すと、目の前の商店街が少し違って聞こえた。

遠くで曲がったトラックの低いエンジン音が、建物のあいだを通って近づいてくる。音は一度大きくなり、交差点を過ぎると、ゆっくり右側へ移っていった。

レコーダーの画面では、二本のレベルメーターがエンジン音に合わせて上下していた。緑色の帯は中央付近まで伸びているが、その上にはまだ広い空間がある。

「そこ、もう少し上げてもええんちゃう？」

隣を歩いていた友人が言った。

水野は片方のイヤホンを外した。

「何を？」

「録音の音量。メーター、全然上まで行ってないやん。小さく録ったら、もったいなくない？」

友人の言うことも分からなくはなかった。入力を上げれば、遠くの音や小さな声は、もっとはっきり記録できる。

水野は入力ダイヤルへ指を置いたが、回さなかった。

「この通り、急に大きい音が来るから」

「今、静かやで」

「今はな」

二人の前で、古い喫茶店のシャッターが動き始めた。

錠前の外れる乾いた音に続き、金属の板が持ち上がっていく。板と板の継ぎ目が順番に折れ、低い振動がアーケードの天井まで広がった。

水野はイヤホンを戻した。シャッターの音は、耳で直接聞くより厚く、その震えの奥には店内の食器がかすかに鳴る音まで混じっている。

店主らしい男性が腰を曲げたままシャッターを押し上げ、最後の一段が上がると、店内の暗がりから別の男性が出てきた。二人は短く挨拶を交わしたが、換気扇が回り始めると、小さな声はすぐに低い風の音へ埋もれた。

録音ボタンの赤い表示は、まだ点灯している。

商店街の奥で、自転車のブレーキが短く鳴った。新聞を積んだ自転車が近づき、前輪がタイルの継ぎ目を通るたびに、小さな衝撃音が一定の間隔で続いている。

配達員は二人の横を通り過ぎ、数軒先の店の前で止まった。束ねられた新聞が荷台から持ち上げられ、紙の塊が地面へ置かれる。低く、鈍い音だった。

「そういうのを録りに来てるん？」

友人が尋ねた。

水野は少し考えた。

「そういうのも」

「新聞を置く音？」

「新聞だけじゃなくて、その前後も」

配達員が自転車へ戻ると、スタンドが上がり、ペダルが一度空回りしてからタイヤが動き出した。

新聞が置かれた瞬間だけなら、単なる衝撃音だった。その前には、自転車が近づいてくる音がある。後ろには、配達員が次の店へ向かう音が残る。一つの音だけを切り取るより、その前後まで続いているほうが、水野には聞き直したくなるものだった。

「何に使うん？」

「今のところ、特には」

「使わへんの？」

「たまに聴く」

友人は笑った。

「変わった趣味やな」

水野も否定しなかった。

録音した音を作品として発表しているわけでも、映像へ使う予定があるわけでもない。水野は、日付と場所を付けて音声ファイルを保存していた。

雨が降り始めた駅前。閉店後の地下街。子どもがいなくなった夕方の公園。開店前の市場。コーヒーカップと受け皿が重なる店内。

何かを残したいという気持ちはある。ただ、何を残したいのかと聞かれれば、新聞の音と同じように、一つだけを選んで答えることはできなかった。

商店街の中央付近まで来ると、開店準備の音が増えてきた。シャッターや鍵、台車、段ボール箱、店員同士の挨拶が別々の店から生まれ、アーケードの中で重なっていく。

どれも、それだけなら特別な音ではない。一軒ずつ店が営業を始めるにつれて、通り全体が別の時間へ移りつつあった。

右側の惣菜店から、金属製の立て看板を持った女性が出てきた。

女性は看板の脚を開いたが、片側がうまく固定されない。立て直そうとしたところで看板が手元から滑り、金属の角がタイルへ当たった。

鋭い音が、アーケードの中を走った。

水野の指は反射的に入力ダイヤルへ触れたが、音はすでに鳴り終わっている。レベルメーターは一気に伸び、緑色の帯が黄色へ入り、その先まで跳ねていた。

一番上の赤い表示には触れていない。

惣菜店の女性は周囲を見回し、誰にともなく頭を下げた。止まった台車がまた動き始め、通りには開店準備の音が戻ってくる。

友人が水野の手元をのぞき込んだ。

「今のは大きかったな」

水野は録音を停止した。画面上の波形には、一か所だけ高い山ができており、その先端は表示枠の内側に収まっている。

「これがあるから、上げすぎたくない」

「さっきのまま上げてたら？」

「たぶん、今のところだけ音が潰れてる」

「それ以外は大きく録れるのに？」

「それ以外はな」

水野は録音した音を最初から再生し、イヤホンの片方を友人へ渡した。

遠くのトラックが近づいてくる。喫茶店のシャッターが上がり、新聞の束が地面へ置かれる。店員同士の声は換気扇へ消え、そのあとで金属の看板が落ちた。

音は大きかったが、割れてはいなかった。

金属の角がタイルへ当たった硬さと、板面が遅れて震える音を分けて聞くことができる。その背後には、驚いて止まった台車の車輪と、女性の靴が一歩動いた音まで残っていた。

友人はイヤホンを外した。

「普通に聞いてたときより、いろいろ鳴ってるな」

水野は録音ファイルを保存した。画面に日付と時刻が表示される。

「静かやと思ってたけど」

友人が通りを見ながら言った。

商店街には人が増え始め、開いた店から匂いが流れてきていた。惣菜店では油が温まり、喫茶店からはコーヒーの香りが出ている。

水野はレコーダーを上着のポケットへ入れた。

静かな時間ほど、街は急に大きな音を出す。その音がいつ来るのかは、録音を始めた時点では分からない。

分からないから、すべてを最初から大きくはしない。

画面を消す前に、先ほどの波形をもう一度だけ見た。

高い山の上には、わずかな空間が残っていた。

If the most important person in the world said that, what would happen?

I went to a ramen shop.

The franchise ramen shop that used to be over there apparently has nobody inside anymore.

Across from it, the stubborn old man’s ramen shop is still there.

I took the seat right in front of the old man.

“I don’t have any money. Is that okay?”

When I asked, he said,

“Only people who get it can eat our pig.”

He let me eat for free. I don’t really know why.

I wanted to know how the old man felt.

Then I wanted to read about the ecology of pigs, so I decided to head to the university library.

There was no one at the university.

At the university in the next town, the one people call an old Imperial University, apparently there are still quite a lot of people.

Something about dialogue in the same physical place being important, or whatever.

This is an F-rank university whose purpose I don’t really understand.

Everywhere, children are running races or playing tag.

On the connecting corridor, there was also a person sleeping wrapped in a blanket. I had seen that person sleeping under a bridge before.

When I entered the library, there were a few people.

There was already a girl reading a book about the ecology of pigs.

“Did you eat it?”

I asked, and she said,

“I did, but I left a little. I felt bad about it, so I thought I should learn about the pig.”

She said it looking slightly downward, her face twitching.

I told her I would come back and read it another time, temporarily handed over the right to read, and went for a walk outside.

I needed to use the bathroom, so I headed to a convenience store.

At the entrance, a group in yankee-style delinquent fashion was squatting while eating rice balls and bread.

“You wanna go in here?”

one of them asked, so I replied,

“I just wanted to borrow the restroom.”

They didn’t seem especially likely to bully me, and they didn’t try to shake me down.

I used the bathroom normally and went back outside.

The yankees were drinking dessert smoothies and passing them around.

“This is lukewarm. Lukewarm. Actually kind of good. Try some. You get it?”

I felt like moving my body, so I went to a batting center.

There were a few people.

But the pitching machines weren’t running.

Several groups were there, gently tossing soft rubber baseballs from a diagonal angle to whoever stood in the batter’s box, and having them hit those.

There was one pair of young people who looked like a couple.

The woman was standing in the batter’s box.

“Your tosses are so bad! lol”

“Huh? Sorry, sorry. It’s harder than it looks.”

As the man was saying this and failing to do it well, a man with thick arms, wearing a T-shirt from a baseball gear brand, came over and said,

“Brother, relax your hand. Set the top of the parabola around your girlfriend’s belly button, then just kind of toss it up.”

After I saw him start throwing a little better, I went into an empty batting box.

The machine didn’t work, so I used one of the bats there and took about fifteen practice swings.

The thick-armed man was clearly watching my swing as if checking it, so I got a bad feeling and left the box pretty quickly.

When I went out of the building, there was the bank where I usually withdraw money.

I got curious and went inside. A well-built man in a suit, wearing a stocking over his head, was standing in a commanding pose on top of the teller counter.

“Hand over the money! Fill this bag with as much as you can!”

He made the shape of a pistol with his hand and said bang, bang toward the ceiling with his mouth.

A woman in a bank teller’s uniform, half-smiling, said,

“Please forgive us with this. This is all of it!”

and stuffed ten or twenty bundles of ten-thousand-yen bills into the bag.

『When a Pockmark Looks Like a Pockmark』

While watching Ultra Q with affection for all its old technical limits, one shot of the airplane instruments refuses to make sense. A proverb about loving even the flaws in what you love turns itself inside out, just once.

There is a Japanese proverb, “abata mo ekubo.”

Abata means rough skin, pockmarks. Ekubo means the little dent in your cheek when you smile, a symbol of cuteness.

If it is the pockmark of someone you love, it can even look like a dimple. It is a Japanese proverb with a nuance close to “love is blind.”

Ever since I was little, I have liked Ultraman, Japan’s national hero. I would not say I am some serious maniac about it, but if there are goods around, I look at them, I pick them up, and if someone says the name of a monster, as long as it is a reasonably famous one, I can usually recognize it.

These days, I pay for and sometimes watch “TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION,” the subscription service run by Tsuburaya Productions, the production company that made Ultraman. It has archived and made into a database the old Ultraman series, related works, and TV programs from that whole area.

The ones famous around the world are probably the original Ultraman and Ultraseven, those sorts of titles. But before the Ultraman series with Ultraman in it, there was an SF drama called Ultra Q. It aired back in the age of black-and-white television.

I assume it has 28 episodes and ends there, probably, and when I found out that Ultra Q was available inside the subscription service, I watched all of it recently.

Basically, it is old technology, so it is not like today, where you can make a giant monster look huge and smooth, or make a monster fly through the sky as smoothly as CG.

When a monster flies, or when an airplane flies, depending on the light, because they are models, you can faintly see the acrylic wires holding them up.

The voices too, it is not as if microphones were hanging down near the actors’ mouths or over their heads, so the lines are dubbed in afterward.

Technically, it is still very rough. But the ideas and the messages are wonderful, so basically I enjoyed it the whole time.

Under those harsh technical limits of the past, the fact that they managed to make 28 episodes with that much heat in them—I basically watched it with the feeling of “abata mo ekubo.” But in episode 27, there was one part I just could not stop noticing.

Simply put, it was an airplane scene in the drama. The captain and the first officer—well, the pilot and co-pilot, I guess—are in the airplane, and they get caught in some terrible turbulence. At that moment, the co-pilot says loudly to the main pilot,

“Look. The numbers are dropping.”

Then, as expected, the captain snaps his eyes over to the instruments with all the various numbers for the airplane.

First, there is a big close-up of his face looking at them, and then the gauges get a one-shot close-up. They are probably very realistic gauges. You know, those needle-type meters.

There are tons of them across the whole screen, and on top of that it is black and white, and all of them are swinging around, going off in different directions, shaking and doing all kinds of things. From the viewer’s side, I have absolutely no idea which number is dropping.

Even if I watched it a second time, I still probably would not know which gauge’s number was going down.

Couldn’t they have done something about that scene?

As a sign that the story was about to enter a big development, probably some kind of airplane-crash situation, it was just a little too rough. The pockmark simply looked like a pockmark.

That is the story.

「3、2、1、はい。“はい”から先は、世界中のお金の価値はなしとします。」

世界で一番偉い人がそう言ったとしたら、どうなるのだろうか。

ラーメン屋に行った。

あちらにあったフランチャイズのラーメン屋は、中に誰もいなくなったらしい。

その向かいにある頑固なオヤジのラーメン屋は、まだある。

オヤジの目の前の席についた。

「お金、ないですけど、いいですか？」

と聞くと、

「うちのブタは、わかるやつしか食べられねえ。」

無料で食べさせてくれた。理由はよくわからない。

オヤジの気持ちが知りたくなった。

ブタの生態を読みたくなり、大学の図書館に向かうことにした。

大学には人がいなかった。

隣町の旧帝国と呼ばれる大学には、まだ結構人がいるらしい。

その場の対話が重要なんだとかなんとか。

ここはFランクのよくわからない大学。

あらゆるところで、子どもがかけっこしたり、鬼ごっこしたりしている。

渡り廊下には、毛布にくるまって寝ている人もいた。前に、橋の下で寝ているのを見かけたことがある人だった。

図書館に入ると、少し人がいた。

すでにブタの生態の本を読んでいる女の子がいた。

「食べたんですか？」

と聞くと、

「食べたけど、少し残してしまって。申し訳なくなって、ぶたさんのことを知ろうと思って。」

と、顔を引きつらせながら、うつむき加減で言っていた。

また今度読みに来るからと、一旦、読書の権利を譲って、外を散歩した。

トイレに行きたくなって、コンビニに向かった。

入り口には、ヤンキーファッションの集団がおにぎりとパンを食べながらしゃがみこんでいた。

「お前、ここに入りてえのか？」

と聞いてきたので、

「お手洗いだけ借りたくて。」

と返した。

とくにいじめてきそうなこともなく、カツアゲもしてこない。

普通にトイレを終えて、外に出た。

ヤンキーたちはデザートのスムージーを飲みながら、

「ぬるいな、これ。ぬるい。意外とうまい。ちょっと飲んでみ。わかる？」

と回し合いっこしていた。

身体を動かそうと思って、バッティングセンターに行った。

人は何人かいた。

しかし、ピッチングマシンは動いていない。

打席に立つ者に、斜め向かいから優しく軟球でトスを上げて、それを打つ集団が数組いた。

一組、カップルのような若者がいた。

打席には女のほうが立っている。

「トスへたくそ！ 笑」

「えー？ ごめんごめん。意外とむずかしいのよ。」

そう言って、うまくできない男のほうに、太い腕をした、野球メーカーのTシャツを着た男が近寄って言った。

「にいさん、手の力は抜いて。放物線の頂点を彼女さんのおへそあたりに定めて、ポイッと上げる感じ。」

少しうまく投げられるようになったのを見届けて、私は空いている打席に入った。

マシンは動かないので、置いてあるバットで15回くらい素振りした。

太い腕の男が、明らかに私のスイングをチェックするように見てきたので、いやな予感がして、早々に打席を出た。

そのまま建物を出たら、いつもお金を下ろしている銀行があった。

気になって入ると、ストッキングをかぶった、恰幅のよいスーツ姿の男性が、窓口カウンターの上に仁王立ちしていた。

「金をよこせ！ このかばんに詰められるだけ詰めろ！」

手でピストルの形を作って、天井に向かってパンパンと口で擬音を言っていた。

銀行員の制服を着た女性が半笑いで、

「これでお許しを。もうこれが全てです！」

と、一万円札の束を十も二十も詰めていた。

『あばたが普通にあばたに見える』

昔の技術ごと愛して見ていた『ウルトラQ』で、どうしても飲み込めない計器のカットが一つあった。好きなものの欠点まで愛せるはずのことわざが、そこで一度だけ裏返る。

日本のことわざで、「あばたもえくぼ」という言葉がある。

あばたというのは、荒れた肌、ブツブツの痕。えくぼは、笑ったときにできるほっぺたのくぼみで、可愛らしさの象徴でもある。

好きな人のあばたであれば、えくぼにすら見える。そういう、「恋は盲目」のようなニュアンスを含む日本のことわざである。

私は小さい頃から、日本の国民的ヒーローであるウルトラマンが好きで、相当なマニアというわけではないが、グッズがあれば見てしまうし、手に取ってしまうし、怪獣の名前を言われれば、それなりに有名なものであれば分かったりはする。

今はもう、ウルトラマンを作った制作プロダクション、円谷プロダクションが運営している、かつてのウルトラマンシリーズとか、その界隈の作品やテレビ番組の映像をデータベース化して、アーカイブで見せてくれるサブスクリプション「TSUBURAYA IMAGINATION」に有料課金で登録して、時々見ている。

世界的に有名なのは、初代ウルトラマンやウルトラセブン、こういったところだと思うのだが、ウルトラマンが出てくるウルトラマンシリーズの前身である『ウルトラQ』というSFドラマが、かつて放送されていた。モノクロのテレビの時代である。

私はそれが28話分、おそらく28話で完結しているものなのだと推測されるが、『ウルトラQ』がサブスクリプションの中で見られるというのを知ったので、先日すべて見終えた。

基本的には昔の技術なので、今のように滑らかに巨大な怪獣を大きく見せたり、怪獣が空を飛ぶとき、それがCGのように滑らかに飛んだり、ということはない。

怪獣が飛ぶときや飛行機が飛ぶときは、光の加減で、模型を吊るしているアクリルの線がうっすら見えたりする。

声も、役者の口元や頭の上からマイクを垂らしているわけではないので、後からアフレコをしている。

技術的にはまだまだ甘いんだが、発想とかメッセージが素晴らしいので、基本的にはずっと楽しい。

昔の厳しい技術力の中で、よくもここまで熱量のあるものを28話分作ったなというところで、私も基本的には「あばたもえくぼ」という感じで見終えた次第なのだが、27話でどうしても気になったところがあった。

単的に言うと、ドラマの中に登場してくる飛行機のシーンなのだが、機長と副機長、まあ操縦士と副操縦士かな、が飛行機に乗っていると、大変な気流に巻き込まれるシーンがあり、そのときに副操縦士がメインの操縦士に向かって、

「見てください。数値が下がっています」

と大きな声で言う。

そうすると、お決まりのように、機長がその飛行機のいろいろな数字が出ている計器をバッと見る。

最初に、その見ている顔のアップがドンと差し込まれて、その次に計器がワンと映るのだが、多分ものすごくリアルな計器なんでしょう。いわゆる針式のメーターですね。

これが山ほど画面全体にあって、しかもモノクロで、全部がいろんなところを振り切ったり、揺れたりしていて、どの数値が下がっているのか、見ているこちらからすると全く分からないのだ。

2回目を見ても、私はいまだにどの計器の数値が下がっているのか、多分分からないと思う。

あのシーンはどうにかならなかったものなのか。

今から話が大きな展開を迎えるであろう、飛行機墜落系の前触れとしてはちょっと雑すぎて、あばたが普通にあばたに見えてしまったという、そんなお話。

医者：非常に安定した脳波と心電図です。

受診者：本当に？ 今の時代、みんな何か一つは病気を持ってると聞きますよ？

医者：はい。かなり異常です。緊急入院しましょう。

Yasuragi 〜大安寧〜

Interest notes / seeds of curiosity

There are said to be about 3.9 billion women in the world.
The average shoulder width is about 45 centimeters.
Since the circumference of the Earth is roughly 40,075 kilometers, if all of them were to stand side by side, the line would wrap around the planet about forty-four times.

Because they wouldn’t all fit in a single loop, they’d have to line up in a spiral—like thread wound around a spool.
And that brings up another problem.

The Earth is a sphere, so the radius of the spiral gets smaller as it winds outward.
That means the number of turns must be greater than forty-four.
If we use the entire surface of the Earth and calculate carefully, it seems that with a spiral pitch of about 290 kilometers, the total comes to sixty-nine turns.

Well, it wouldn’t really work—most of the planet is ocean, after all.

Still, if I were to start at one end of that “spiral of women” and walk all the way to the other, looking at each of them as I passed,
I wonder how many times I’d fall in love at first sight.
