## Chapter 14: A Smaller Venue

Three days before the performance, Mizuno received an email from the organizer.

The subject line read:

[Important] Notice of Venue Change

A problem had been found in the air-conditioning equipment at the planned rakugo venue, and there was no clear date for repairs. The performance would therefore move to a nearby civic hall. It had not been canceled, but there would be fewer seats and the stage equipment would be simpler.

The civic hall was about a ten-minute walk from the previous venue. The Third Meeting Room, where the performance would be held, had a capacity of sixty. Mizuno’s reserved seat would remain secured. Saeki had another commitment, so he went alone this time.

On the day, a notice printed on copy paper was taped near the entrance to the civic hall.

Asanoya Ichifune Local Rakugo Show

Second Floor, Third Meeting Room

Following the handwritten arrow upstairs, Mizuno found the reception desk set up on a long, narrow table in the hall.

“Sorry for the sudden change,” the organizer said as he accepted Mizuno’s ticket.

“That must have been difficult.”

“We’re glad we could hold it at all. The sound and lighting won’t be what they were at the other venue.”

At the front of the Third Meeting Room, two conference tables had been placed side by side with a board across them to make a low stage. Without the red cloth and cushion, it would have looked like a meeting still being set up.

There was no stage lighting, only two small lamps aimed at the front. The entrance music would apparently be played from one speaker by the wall and a laptop.

The audience was close as well. There were only a few steps between the front folding chair and the cushion. Even seated near the back, Mizuno felt the stage was immediately in front of him. The walls were thin, and the voice of a man who sounded like an instructor sometimes came from the next room.

Some of the customers from the previous venue were there. An elderly woman in the front row repeatedly thanked the organizer and laughed.

“It’s closer, so I can see their faces.”

At the scheduled time, the organizer greeted the room without a microphone. In a room for sixty, an unamplified voice reached the back.

“Because of the equipment situation, today’s performance will be a little different from usual, but we hope you enjoy it to the end.”

After the applause, the entrance music came from the speaker. It was thin, and the low end barely spread, but it served as a signal for someone to come onto the stage.

The opening performer began with how close the audience was.

“Today I can see all your faces very well. And I imagine you can see mine very well too.”

When the audience laughed, the sound returned to the stage immediately. At the previous venue, reactions had spread from the front toward the back. In this room, they came back from the same place as the performer.

Throat-clearing, clothing rubbing, and paper being folded were close too. It was not a room where only the performer’s voice could be heard, but even small changes in the audience reached the stage.

After the second storyteller left, there was a short intermission.

The class in the next room continued.

“Now take a moment to check your posture.”

The words came clearly through the wall, and several people in the audience lifted their heads.

This room had not been prepared for a rakugo show. When the intermission ended, Ichifune’s performance would begin with the neighboring voice still there.

After the thin entrance music, Asanoya Ichifune climbed onto the low stage.

His face was closer than it had been before. After looking across the audience, he began in a slightly restrained voice.

“Today’s venue changed on short notice. I almost went to the other building myself.”

The audience laughed.

“The performer is the one who read the venue-change notice least carefully.”

When the laughter spread, Ichifune did not wait long. The audience’s response returned immediately in front of him. If he used the same pause as before, the next line would arrive late. He put it in just before the laughter disappeared.

His voice was not as loud as it had been before either. The distance did not require him to push it toward the back. Using his usual volume would strike the front row too hard.

The reduction in equipment did not mean Ichifune was adding something else to fill the gap. He lowered his voice, shortened the pauses, and adjusted the movement of the story to the size of the room.

The main story was about a man in a row house who went next door to borrow a cooking pot.

He meant to borrow only the pot, but the neighbor asked what he was making for dinner. Another resident began commenting on the seasoning and how to start the fire. Eventually even the landlord joined in.

Each time Ichifune changed the direction of his face and voice, the man borrowing the pot, the neighbor, and the landlord traded places. The stage was low and the fluorescent lights remained bright, but the people in the row house appeared before the white meeting-room walls did.

In the middle of the story, the instructor’s voice entered from the next room.

“Next, slowly roll your shoulders.”

It overlapped Ichifune’s words, and the audience’s attention was pulled once toward the other side of the wall.

Ichifune did not raise his voice to push back. He stopped until the neighboring voice ended, then placed the previous line again in a slightly different form.

The audience’s attention returned to the story.

The man had only meant to borrow a pot, but before he knew it, the neighbors had taken over the cooking itself, and the meal was carried to the landlord’s house.

When Ichifune played the man looking around his empty home, the audience laughed.

Unlike in a larger venue, laughter did not overlap after arriving late from the back. Laughter that began in one place passed immediately to the next person and reached the whole room in a short time.

Ichifune placed the final line where that laughter remained.

The audience laughed once more.

The applause was not as long as before, but the performance in the poorly equipped meeting room did not feel unfinished. The characters had taken shape. The row house dinner had been carried to the landlord’s home. The audience had received the ending.

After the performance, the woman in the front row said to the customer beside her, “Because we were close, I could see the expressions.”

“But the chairs at the usual place are easier.”

“That’s true.”

They laughed.

The close venue had its own advantages, but it had not become more comfortable than before. The entrance music was thin. Voices came through from the next room. Sitting for a long time on a folding chair tired the body.

Worse conditions had not simply created new value.

Mizuno waited for the audience to thin, then spoke to Ichifune beside the stage.

“Thank you again today.”

“Thank you.”

“It was a different venue, but it still felt like the same performance.”

“When the place changes, I adjust to the place.”

“Was your voice different too?”

“A little quieter. When people are this close, my usual voice would be hard on those in front.”

“The pauses seemed shorter too.”

“Because they’re close, the response comes quickly. If I wait too long, an empty space opens.”

Ichifune was not saying that reduced equipment caused no problem. A different room created more difficult points, and leaving them untouched would not produce the usual story.

“But you don’t change the story?”

“The story is the same.”

That answer came immediately.

“I adjust to the place, but I can’t hand the core of the story over to the place.”

Clearing began around them. A staff member lowered the small lamps from their stands. Power cables rubbed along the floor, and the light that had illuminated the stage disappeared.

“Can you perform without sound equipment or a stage?”

“If I can see their faces and there’s a place to sit. If there’s no stage, I’ll do it on the floor.”

Ichifune laughed slightly.

“My knees might hurt a little.”

“What would have to disappear before you couldn’t do it?”

He did not answer this question immediately.

When the staff removed the red cloth, only the cushion remained on the conference tables.

“If I couldn’t speak,” Ichifune said.

“Or if I forgot the story. Something like that.”

The organizer called him, and Ichifune returned to the cleanup.

By the time Mizuno left, the reception table had been folded and the notice removed from the wall. In the Third Meeting Room, the red cloth was folded, and the tables that had been the stage only moments earlier had returned to their normal height.

The form of the rakugo show disappeared quickly from the room.

In the first-floor lobby, Mizuno opened his notebook.

The venue becomes smaller.

Sound, lighting, and seating decrease.

Below that, he wrote:

The performance remained.

What has to remain for it to be the same product?

The next morning, Kuroda was waiting for documents beside the multifunction printer.

When Mizuno went to collect his own printout, Kuroda saw the rakugo program in his hand.

“Rakugo again?”

“The venue changed suddenly yesterday.”

“Was it canceled?”

“They did it in a small meeting room.”

“And?”

“There was less lighting and sound equipment. Fewer than half as many seats.”

The multifunction printer released one sheet.

“Could they still do rakugo?”

“They could. The voice and timing changed for the room, but the story remained.”

“That means they could operate in a degraded state.”

“A degraded state?”

“When you can’t maintain everything, you keep the center running.”

Kuroda looked at the printer display. The remaining page count was falling.

“In a factory or a system, you can’t stop everything just because one part fails. Stop what needs to stop and keep the necessary functions moving.”

“You can’t do that unless you know what the center is first?”

“Right. Work that knows what to stop and what not to stop can move even under bad conditions.”

Mizuno opened the page from the night before.

What has to remain for it to be the same product?

Below it, he wrote:

When conditions worsen,

what must remain for the product to continue?

Degraded-operation capability

The final sheet fell into the printer tray.

When the machine stopped, only the voices in the office remained.

Interest notes / Seeds of Semi-Sci-Fi Curiosity

July. I came home.

When I turned on the light in the humid room, there it was, stuck to the wall: summer’s defending champion, the rhinoceros beetle.

Except no. The all-season challenger. That thing.

This year too, it had fought its way through the district preliminaries—no, the underground preliminaries—and arrived wearing a shade close to the champion’s uniform.

Final round: Human Stadium.

Anyway, while I was commentating with those worthless, maggot-like turns of phrase, the thing would get away. So without a pause, I picked up the spray insecticide by the entrance, the one made specifically for that thing.

When I buy seasonings for food, I care about versatility, so I buy things like pepper, basil, or chili oil.

When I buy clothes, too, I buy shirts that are not too sharp-edged, easy to mix and wear in different combinations.

But with insecticide, I want the specialized one.

I do not need versatility.

I only want to end that thing.

Every time summer comes, I find myself thinking that kind of thought.

Freshly, as if I never get tired of it.

But somehow, this summer, I thought a little differently.

If that thing and I could have even a small conversation, would our response change even a little?

No. Not that thing. Let me call them they.

If you ask people, in a survey, what they dislike about them, the common answers are:

They look gross.

They seem like they might fly toward me.

You cannot read where they are trying to go.

That is most of it.

But if that is all, there are humans like that too.

A rowdy toddler who has not learned language yet. A nuisance YouTuber you cannot have a conversation with.

And besides, that thing—no, they—have caused less real social damage than those humans.

They do not scribble on the sofa, or lick the soy sauce container at a sushi restaurant.

Even so, their very existence is fiercely rejected, and they are not merely avoided. They are chased around on the assumption that they will be exterminated.

If there were a translator that let us talk with them, there are a few things I would want to ask.

Why are you in my home?

Where did you get in from?

What is your purpose?

Interrogation-style questioning before the insecticide.

There are other questions, too, if I think about it.

What do you want to eat?

What would make you stop coming into human dwellings?

Questions less about coexistence than about a kind of diplomacy where they agree not to come over here.

And then there are still other questions.

Which restaurant’s leftovers were good?

Which areas have relatively dirty sewers, and which are, strangely, on the cleaner side?

Requests for marketing and maintenance data that only those living along the back-pipe routes could share.

If they really answered these questions properly, what would we feel?

Would we be able to pull the trigger of the handgun called the specialized insecticide, still clenched in our hand?

This summer, with a pssshh, their first-round defeat was decided.

『The Wooden Maternity Mark』

On a crowded commuter train, a woman who is offered a priority seat has an unfamiliar wooden mark hanging from her bag. Sometimes a sign made to help people becomes harder to recognize when it is made more stylish.

###

I once thought that maybe this is what people mean when they say something was made without listening to the people on the ground.

My workplace is in a place called Ibaraki City, in Osaka Prefecture. Every morning, I take the train there. It is a very crowded train, so more than 95 percent of the time, I end up standing, holding on to a strap.

It is the Hankyu line going from Osaka toward Kyoto. A semi-express train bound for Kyoto-kawaramachi, which tends to have a lot of passengers.

That day, as usual, I was standing in front of the priority seats, holding on to a strap. My destination was still quite a way off, but when the train stopped at the next station, the man sitting right in front of me, in the priority seat, stood up and got off the train.

I gratefully sat down in the empty priority seat.

Looking around, I did not see any elderly people in particular. There were just a lot of high school students, younger than me, who still looked like they could keep working hard at club activities.

Then, after I sat down, people got off the train, and then new people came in. The passengers changed, but the train was reassembled with about the same number of people as before.

In the place where I had been standing, there was now a woman who seemed to be in her late twenties or early thirties. A pretty woman. She was wearing a green dress, a little more casual than office casual, and had something like a shoulder bag hanging from her shoulder.

Since I had managed to sit down, I was thinking maybe I would sleep a little. I leaned my head against the wall above the seat, half nodding off.

Then the train arrived at the next station.

The person sitting in the priority seat across from me stood up and got off at that station. An empty seat appeared, so another woman sat down there.

Right around the moment she sat down, just as the person from that priority seat had stood up and was getting off the train, the woman in the green dress standing in front of me noticed that the seat behind her had opened up. She turned around and checked it.

But by then, someone else had already sat down, so the woman in the green dress could not sit.

Still, since she had turned her body toward the seat as if she might sit there, the woman who had sat down first and the woman in the green dress seemed to make very direct eye contact.

Then the woman who had sat down first stood up again and gave the seat to the woman in the dress.

I thought, what a kind person. At the same time, half of me wondered if there was some sign, something I had missed, that meant this person should be sitting in a priority seat.

When the woman in the green dress sat down, she was right across from me, so I checked her whole body very slightly with my eyes.

I did not see any obvious mark.

There is, for example, the Help Mark keychain, with a white cross and heart printed on a red rectangular plate. It is a keychain used by people with physical conditions or some kind of disability to indicate that they may need support. She did not have that.

And there is the maternity mark, the cute icon on a white base with pink, showing a mother and baby together. In Japan, when someone has this maternity mark, it is considered good manners to offer them a seat.

But she did not have that either.

Then I remembered one thing, and I looked closely at a certain part of her.

It was the brown wooden keychain attached to her bag.

I remembered having seen it somewhere before, and then I remembered what it was.

A woman at my workplace had put on the same keychain when she became pregnant. It was not an ordinary keychain. It was one given out by the city office, made with a traditional wood from that town, with the mother-and-child icon carved into it. A craft-style maternity mark keychain.

And then I realized that the thing attached to the bag of the woman in the green dress sitting across from me was the same thing.

At that moment I thought, damn, I should have noticed. But to be honest, it was extremely hard to understand.

Because this mark is something you can only receive from that city office. It is not part of the shared, almost global recognition that exists in public.

The white icon with pink that we usually see. That is the same as the maternity mark you can get anywhere in Japan. The national version.

But the one that this woman and my coworker had been wearing was an original local version, something only people living in that city could receive.

Maybe for fathers or mothers who have raised children in that area, it is something they can notice right away.

But for someone who has not had that experience, it is an unfamiliar mark, one you have almost no way of noticing.

The keychain just looks like a somewhat stylish craft keychain. That is all it looks like.

In fact, when I looked up at the train wall behind the woman in the dress, there was a notice that said,

“Please offer your seat to people wearing this mark.”

And next to those words, the national version of the maternity mark was displayed, large and clear.

It is true that it is important not to ruin the fashion or appearance of people raising children, pregnant women, mothers.

But probably, for both the people being supported and the people trying to support them, the most important thing is whether it is easy to understand.

This is just my guess, but the city employee who thought up this design and decided to actually make it, or the craftsperson who joined the project, was probably someone without children.

Thinking that, I arrived at the station nearest my workplace and got off the train.

## Chapter 13: A Plan That Reduces Added Value

Three water-filter pitchers stood in the center of the meeting room.

The first was the current product, with a clear plastic body and a white lid. The second was a prototype with a heat-resistant glass body, a metal lid, and a thick handle. The third was only a visual mock-up. In the center of its black lid was a small display indicating when the filter should be replaced.

On the monitor against the wall was the title:

High-Added-Value Water-Filter Pitcher Plan

Members of product planning, development, sales, and logistics took their seats. Saeki checked sales data beside Mizuno. Kuroda sat near the window.

The planner explained a proposal for a higher-priced model to sit above the existing product in a market where price competition was intensifying. The product would emphasize materials and design and also pursue demand for gifts.

The additions were heat-resistant glass, a metal lid, three kinds of replacement filters, a smartphone app to manage replacement timing, a dedicated presentation box, and a booklet about water and daily life. After purchase, customers would also receive an instructional video and benefits for subscribers.

“We will avoid price competition through materials, functions, and the purchase experience.”

When Kuroda asked for the expected price, the planner answered 12,000 yen. The current product was in the 3,000-yen range. If placed in the same display, the glass-and-metal prototype would stand out from it.

Create a premium appearance. Increase choice. Make replacement harder to forget. Communicate the product’s background and encourage repeat purchases. Every element had a reason. But as they accumulated, not only the sale price but packaging costs, inventory, inquiries, and explanation time increased as well.

Kuroda asked the planner, “Who buys it?”

“Customers replacing the current model and customers looking for stronger design.”

“You’re including gifts too.”

“Yes.”

“Are they the same customer?”

The planner paused.

“Not entirely. But we think they have common ground as customers for a higher-priced product.”

“Why are a product for the current retail section and a gift product being combined into one product?”

No answer followed immediately. The projector fan turned at a steady volume.

The planner’s materials included existing research on price ranges and design preferences. But they did not show whether users of the current product and people choosing gifts needed the same product.

“Before adding value, let’s check what the current customer is buying,” Kuroda said.

“We have existing research. On price range and design preference—”

“Is it research we can use to judge this plan?”

Kuroda did not interrupt the explanation. He only added another question.

The planner checked the materials.

“I can’t say it’s sufficient.”

“Then start there. Don’t create reasons to make it 12,000 yen. Look at what customers are paying for.”

The meeting ended without a conclusion.

The following week, Mizuno and Saeki interviewed twenty people: long-term users, people who had stopped using the product, and people who had switched to a competitor. They did not decide the product from the answers alone. They compared them with inquiry histories, return reasons, and replacement-filter purchase records.

They asked what people had compared before buying, what had made them hesitate before first use, what dissatisfied them during use, how they bought replacements, and what conditions would matter if they bought a new one.

A woman in her forties had tried to compare filtration performance but could not understand the difference. In the end, she chose the product that fit in the refrigerator door. She also said that if she could not tell the filters apart, one kind was enough.

Another buyer had broken one of the tabs on the white lid. Although the body still worked, the buyer could not find a replacement lid and switched to another manufacturer. The problem was not filtration performance.

A woman who had stopped using the product could not check the replacement filter’s model number on the bottom of the pitcher and simply stopped. There were also repeated answers about the instructions for first use: how long to soak the filter, how many times to discard the first water, and how to attach the lid were spread across multiple pages, and people could not reach the first use.

Some people did want glass or a box suitable for a gift. But those were not the first things current users mentioned. The gift market needed separate research.

When Saeki added the answers to a table, the choice of filter, the first-use procedure, and damage to the lid overlapped with inquiry histories and return reasons. They could be treated not as the preferences of only twenty people, but as places where users of the existing product repeatedly had trouble.

“What about gift customers?” Mizuno asked.

“We need to research them separately. These results don’t mean the gift market doesn’t exist.”

At the next meeting, Saeki posted a table on the wall with the interview results arranged by frequency.

Near the top were:

I do not want to buy the wrong replacement filter.

It fits in the refrigerator.

I can start using it immediately.

It is hard to break.

Replacement parts are easy to find.

The instructions are short.

The price is within the range of an ordinary purchase.

Near the bottom were:

Premium materials.

Multiple filters.

Smartphone integration.

A box suitable for a gift.

Saeki wrote frequently mentioned user concerns on blue sticky notes and proposed additions from the current plan on white ones. When the participants finished placing them on the wall, the blue and white notes barely overlapped.

Mizuno looked at the mock-up with the black display.

“Before notifying people through an app when to replace the filter, it may be more important for them to know which filter to buy.”

The developer answered, “We can use the same filter for the current and new products.”

“What about the three kinds?” the planner asked.

“We’ll reduce them to one standard specification. We’ll maintain the same filtration performance as the current product, and the required removal performance and safety testing will not change.”

“That reduces the choices.”

There was something in the planner’s voice beyond simple opposition. The differences among the three filters had also been one of the central features used to explain the higher-end model.

Saeki indicated the blue column.

“These users mentioned wanting to avoid a wrong choice more often than wanting more choices.”

“Some customers want to select a higher-performance filter.”

“We need to consider a separate product for those customers. The question is whether the higher-end model in the existing retail section needs all three.”

The planner did not answer immediately.

The 12,000-yen product had many points that could be described as features of an upper model. Removing them would make the choice easier for the customer, but it would also reduce the visible novelty of the plan.

Mizuno lifted the metal lid. It looked good and had weight in the hand, but several parts were used inside it.

“What happens if this is dropped?”

The developer took the lid.

“The rim may deform.”

“Can the lid be replaced by itself?”

“Yes. But we would have to keep it in stock as a dedicated part.”

The developer also turned over the white lid of the current product.

“This is the part that broke in the inquiries.”

He indicated the thin tab.

“Can it be thicker?”

“Yes. The appearance would change slightly, but the number of parts would not increase.”

“We would need durability testing,” the planner said.

“Yes. We would thicken the tab and repeat opening-and-closing and drop tests.”

Without changing it to metal, they could strengthen the place customers had broken. It would not look more expensive at first sight, but the chance of trouble during use would fall.

Regarding the mock-up with the display, the planner asked, “If we remove the app, how will we tell users when to replace the filter?”

“We can put a space on the filter itself where they can write the replacement date,” the developer answered.

“We’ll also remove the video and benefits from this version.”

“What about the gift proposal?” Mizuno asked.

“We’ll make it a separate plan.”

The planner kept the glass prototype.

“We shouldn’t judge it from the same research.”

They were not rejecting the gift proposal itself. They were deciding not to force a product for current users and a product that needed a reason to be given as a gift into one survey and one form.

The meeting moved in the opposite direction from the previous one.

To reduce the burden of choice, the filter would be standardized as one kind, and the product name and replacement name would be the same. Both would be displayed prominently on the front of the pitcher and box. Searching the product name online would return only one replacement.

For first use and continued use, the opening steps would be combined on one sheet, and the filter would have a place to write the replacement date.

For durability, the lid tab would be thickened.

The box would become a simple one that showed the product shape and replacement part in the store.

The app, thick presentation box, brand booklet, video, and benefits were removed from the plan.

The numbers in the estimate changed too.

12,000 yen.

8,000 yen.

6,000 yen.

The final expected price became 4,800 yen. It was still higher than the current product.

“The lid mold adjustment and durability testing are included,” the developer said.

“And the common filter and display changes,” Saeki confirmed.

“What about profit?” the planner asked.

Saeki displayed the estimate received from accounting.

“It remains within the planned range.”

The sales representative checked the table too.

“At this price, we can place it in the current retail section.”

“The package size stays within the current shipping category,” the logistics representative added.

The planner looked at the white sticky notes remaining on the wall.

“It looks like a plan with less added value. There are fewer things to explain at the store too.”

Glass. Metal. The display. There were fewer changes visible at a glance.

The sentence Saeki had written after Yoshioka’s shop came back to Mizuno.

Do not improve everything.

Choose the place where the customer can rest.

“I think we did reduce it,” Mizuno said.

“But the places where customers were having trouble are better than before.”

“Which places?”

“They don’t choose the wrong replacement.”

“They can start using it immediately,” Saeki continued.

The developer indicated the white lid.

“It is harder to break.”

“Replacement parts are easier to find,” the sales representative said.

“In the store, shorter explanations help. We don’t have to explain why it lacks premium materials.”

The planner compared the three prototypes.

“It isn’t flashy.”

“No,” Mizuno answered.

“I don’t think this is a plan that raises every meter.”

Saeki wrote three lines on the whiteboard.

Choose the satisfaction points customers value.

Exceed expectations slightly only there.

Hold back input elsewhere.

“What do we call it in the plan?” the planner asked.

Saeki reread the three lines.

“Selective surplus design at customer satisfaction points.”

Mizuno said it aloud too. “Selective surplus design at customer satisfaction points.”

“That’s long.”

“It is,” Saeki admitted.

“But that’s what we’re trying to do,” Mizuno said.

The meeting-room door opened, and Kuroda entered after finishing another meeting. His first words after reading the whiteboard were:

“That’s long.”

“It’s a working name,” Saeki answered.

“Another working name.”

Kuroda did not ask them to explain the plan from the beginning. He checked the revised numbers.

“The price?”

“4,800 yen.”

“Higher than the current product.”

“We included the lid durability and first-use improvements,” the developer answered.

“We did not lower the filtration performance.”

“Profit?”

“Within the planned range.”

“Demand?”

“We are looking mainly at replacement buyers in the current retail section,” the planner answered.

“We’ll research the 12,000-yen gift proposal again for a separate target.”

Even though the combined plan had been split, the gift proposal had not been discarded. The planner still held the research result that some customers needed a higher-priced product.

“Will inquiries decrease?” Kuroda asked.

“We expect fewer questions about filters and first use. We’ll check after launch,” Saeki answered.

Kuroda examined the underside of the white lid.

“It’s fine to benefit the customer. What remains for the company?”

“We can standardize the lid and filter,” the developer said.

“We’ll have fewer dedicated parts and inventory types.”

“We can use the inquiry categories and judgment procedure for the next product too,” Saeki said, indicating the research table.

Looking at the drawing of the simple box, the planner added, “We can standardize how we explain first use as well.”

“Can you use it next time?”

“We’ll leave it in a reusable form.”

“How?”

“We’ll document the research questions and the procedure for planning decisions. After launch, we’ll review inquiries and return reasons using the same categories.”

Kuroda nodded.

“Then proceed.”

That was the entire approval.

When the meeting ended, the glass body and the display mock-up were returned to storage boxes. When the thick presentation-box lid closed, the divider inside rubbed and made a low sound.

Beside it, a prototype of the new simple box was being assembled.

The thin paperboard was folded and the tab inserted. The box took shape in one motion.

## Chapter 12: Kindness That Does Not Fall Apart

A fine rain had been falling since morning on the day Mizuno took Saeki to Yoshioka’s shop.

Even a little after three in the afternoon, when they finished a meeting with a client, the sky remained dark. Rain struck their umbrellas at an angle as they walked toward the station.

“This is it.”

When Mizuno indicated the brown awning, Saeki looked at the menu outside.

“Blend, 450 yen.”

“The shop I told you about.”

“The one selling short breaks.”

“That’s how he described it himself.”

The shop was crowded. Five of the six counter seats were occupied, and only one table near the entrance was open.

“Two?” Yoshioka asked from behind the counter.

“Yes.”

“Wait there a second.”

Yoshioka first delivered the cup he was carrying, then moved the chair on the entrance side farther in.

“Sit over here. You’re wet, and the air hits the entrance side.”

The air from the ceiling unit fell directly onto that seat. Saeki took the inner chair Yoshioka had indicated, and Mizuno sat across from her.

The smells of wet umbrellas and coats mixed with the heat of hot water. In the kitchen, cups continued to be set onto saucers. But the customers’ voices did not spread far beyond their own tables, and despite the activity, the shop remained settled.

“The menu really is small,” Saeki said, closing it.

“Apparently there used to be more.”

“The shop that reduced it.”

When Yoshioka passed nearby, Mizuno ordered two blends.

Just after he added the order to the slip, a man around forty entered. When he saw there were no seats, he checked his watch at the entrance.

“I’m only getting coffee. Can’t you give me one first?”

“Can’t put you first.”

Yoshioka did not move away from the dripper holding the beans.

“It’ll be quick.”

“There are orders ahead of you. Wait about five minutes. A seat should open too.”

“I don’t have time.”

“Then you’d better not force it today.”

His voice did not sound apologetic, but neither was it forceful enough to drive the man out. The man looked once more at the cups lined up, said, “I’ll come another time,” and left.

“He refuses,” Saeki said.

“Probably because changing the order would make the other customers wait.”

“But coffee alone seems like something he could insert.”

“I think he could.”

It had been a short order. But putting one person first would push back the time of everyone already waiting. Yoshioka had not refused because he was unable to do it. He had decided not to.

A customer in work clothes at the back raised his voice.

“Yoshioka, cook me another egg.”

“Can’t add one now.”

“It’s just one.”

“Even one needs space on the stove.”

“A fried egg is fine.”

“A fried egg takes the most space.”

The surrounding customers laughed, and the man who had asked laughed too. “Stingy.”

“If you’d said so at the start, I’d have cooked it. If I put it in now, the orders behind you stop.”

“Then I’ll ask next time.”

“Ask at the beginning next time.”

The customer who had been refused began eating the toast that remained. Yoshioka’s answer had been blunt, but no awkwardness remained between them.

“He doesn’t process exceptions,” Saeki said quietly.

“You were watching?”

“I was.”

Before long, their blends arrived. White cups, small saucers, sugar, and milk. The same arrangement as before.

After placing the cups down, Yoshioka noticed that Saeki’s bag was wet from the rain.

“Wipe the bottom with this. If you put it on the floor, it’ll get wet again.”

He brought a dry cloth from the counter and placed it on the table.

“Sorry.”

“Give it back when you leave.”

“This isn’t an exception?” Saeki asked while wiping the bottom of her bag.

“I refused the egg.”

“Giving me the cloth adds work.”

“But it didn’t change the order of the shop.”

Mizuno drank the coffee. It had the same bitterness and heat as before. He did not need to concentrate in order to find the taste. For a body that had walked through the rain, that was enough.

At the counter, an elderly man had spread a newspaper sideways. When its edge came close to the cup of the customer beside him, Yoshioka placed a small board from the shelf next to the man.

“Put the paper here. You can spread it out.”

“That stand wasn’t here before.”

“It’s the board the magazines were on.”

“Can I just use it?”

“It belongs to the shop.”

He had not created a new product or a special seat for reading the newspaper. He had only moved a board already in the shop. When the man shifted the paper onto it, more room opened between the page and the neighboring cup, and Yoshioka immediately returned to the kitchen.

The rain grew stronger, and more streams of water ran down the window. Then the bell at the entrance rang.

An elderly woman entered and struggled to fit her umbrella into the stand.

“Don’t leave it outside. The wind will take it.”

Yoshioka stopped what he was doing and took the umbrella from her.

“No cane today?”

“I forgot it.”

“You shouldn’t forget it.”

“If I went home for it, I’d get wet again.”

There were still no empty seats, but the man reading the newspaper had begun to pay.

“That one’s opening now. Don’t hurry.”

Yoshioka finished the man’s payment, wiped the chair, and waited until the woman sat down. During that time, the coffee brewing stopped.

“He stopped the process just now,” Saeki said.

“Yeah.”

“But he refused the egg.”

Adding an egg would push back the waiting time of every customer present. If the same order continued, it would become a new menu item. But if he hurried a woman without her cane, sitting down at all would be difficult.

They looked like the same kind of exception, but they were not the same to Yoshioka.

Once the woman settled, he placed water in front of her.

“Coffee?”

“Yeah. The usual.”

That was the whole order.

Changing a seat. Handing over one cloth. Moving a board for a newspaper. Waiting briefly for someone to sit.

All were actions adjusted to a customer’s condition, but they left different amounts of work in the shop.

“If he accepted the egg, the work afterward would increase,” Mizuno said.

“Cook it. Use a plate. Wash it. Delay the next order.”

“If he served one person first, the order would break too,” Saeki added.

“But changing a seat or handing over a cloth is almost finished on the spot.”

“It doesn’t leave work afterward.”

“It doesn’t increase stock or the menu.”

Watch the audience. But do not hand the center of the story to the audience.

Ichifune’s words overlapped the shop in front of them.

Yoshioka was also watching the room. He did not miss wet clothes and bags, the spread of the newspaper, or whether a customer could reach a seat. At the same time, he did not hand the order of service or the process the kitchen could handle to the customers.

“It’s kindness, but the shop doesn’t break,” Mizuno said.

“Kindness that doesn’t break the shop,” Saeki repeated.

When two customers paid one after another, someone waiting near the entrance took the open seat. Yoshioka cleared the cups, wiped only what needed wiping, and moved to the next order.

It was not that he changed nothing. But the order of the shop as a whole did not break.

When the rain weakened and the number of customers fell slightly, Saeki returned the cloth she had borrowed.

“Thank you.”

“Did the bag dry?”

“Yes.”

Mizuno asked Yoshioka, “You refuse customer requests sometimes.”

“I do.”

“But refusing doesn’t mean you aren’t watching them.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You refused the egg. But you paid attention to the seat and the bag.”

“If I listened to everything, the shop wouldn’t run,” Yoshioka answered quickly. “But if I noticed nothing, there’d be no reason to come here. There are other places to get coffee.”

“Have you decided how far you’ll respond?” Saeki asked.

“Less about deciding than whether it increases.”

“What increases?”

“The work left afterward.”

Yoshioka indicated the plate of the customer who had asked for the egg.

“Add one egg, and the cooking, the plate, and the washing all increase. If other people start ordering it, it becomes a menu item.”

Then he lifted the cloth Saeki had returned.

“This only adds one thing to the laundry.”

“So one thing does increase.”

“Of course. There’s hardly any kindness that adds nothing.”

Yoshioka laughed.

“But you can’t add so much that the shop stops running. People come here for a break. If I make them wait, or what we do changes every time they come, it won’t be a break.”

What Yoshioka protected was not the efficiency of the process itself.

Someone could sit quietly, drink something warm, rest for a while, and leave. Sometimes he added work for that. Sometimes he refused a request in order to protect the same condition.

“You don’t improve everything that could be improved,” Mizuno said.

“You can’t do everything,” Yoshioka answered, and began washing the next cup.

Mizuno and Saeki paid 900 yen for the two blends and left the shop.

The rain had nearly stopped. Only the water remaining along the edge of the road trembled thinly whenever a car passed. On the way to the station, Saeki wrote the day’s notes into her phone.

Do not improve everything.

Choose the places where the customer strongly feels value.

Place surplus there, within a range that does not break the operation.

“Are you going to name it again?” Mizuno asked.

“Not yet.”

“Does that mean the cloth was included in the 450 yen?”

“I don’t think it was the cloth itself,” Saeki answered.

“It was the room to notice the customer’s condition.”

As they descended the station stairs, the sound of rain disappeared and the announcement of an arriving train came closer.

The egg that had been refused. The order that had not been changed. The seat away from the air conditioner. The cloth handed to a wet bag.

There had not been a large amount of kindness.

Yoshioka had not done everything he could for any one person. The shop had enough time to see the customers, and on the customer’s side there was a place where it was slightly easier to stay than 450 yen had led them to expect.

## Chapter 11: The Same Shop, Different Customers

Mizuno returned to Segawa’s shop about three months after his first cup there.

On a weekend afternoon, he turned off his recorder at the entrance to the shopping arcade. Unlike the early morning, shoppers’ voices, bicycle bells, and vendors calling from storefronts overlapped along the street.

When he turned onto the street with the shop, two white signs stood side by side that had not been there before.

One read:

Today’s Daily Coffee

500 yen

The other read:

Reservation-Only Tasting

Every Saturday

The earlier menu remained as well. Panama Geisha, 1,000 yen. The price had not changed.

Segawa recognized Mizuno as soon as he entered.

“It’s been a while.”

“You remember me?”

“You’re the person who drank the Geisha and asked whether I should add something for people in the neighborhood.”

“Sorry about that.”

“No. I did add something.”

There were four customers inside. A man in work clothes was drinking alone by the window. A young man and woman at the counter were alternating between two differently shaped cups. At the back, a woman slowly raised her cup while working on a laptop.

There were more customers than before, but the shop was not full. Empty chairs remained between them.

The counter menu had grown from three items to four. At the top was the 500-yen daily coffee. Beneath it were the same blend, Ethiopian coffee, and Panama Geisha as before.

“What will you have today?”

Mizuno looked once at the word Geisha, then ordered the daily coffee.

Segawa took beans from a separate container, and the short sound of the grinder spread through the shop.

While it ran, the man by the window stood to pay.

“This was easy to drink.”

“Thank you.”

“When I saw the price outside before, I figured this wasn’t a shop for me.”

The man placed a 500-yen coin on the counter.

“For this, I’ll come again.”

“Any time.”

When the man left, the window seat opened. Mizuno moved there and listened to the conversation between the couple at the counter.

“This one is brighter,” the woman said of one cup.

“As the temperature drops, the aroma will open a little more,” Segawa replied.

The man checked the farm name and processing method on the card beside the cup.

In the same shop, one person drank a quick cup and left, two people compared flavors, and another stayed for a long time while working. They all ordered coffee, but that did not mean they had come for the same reason.

Segawa brought Mizuno’s coffee.

The white cup was slightly thicker than the one used for the Geisha, and there was no card with farm information.

“Today it’s a blend of Brazilian and Colombian beans. I prioritized sweetness and ease of drinking over aroma.”

The first sip had a mild bitterness. He did not need to recall an explanation to understand the taste or wait for it to cool. It was not thin, and after he swallowed, a sweetness like burnt sugar remained.

“It’s good.”

“Thank you.”

“Did you switch to cheaper beans?”

“They’re cheaper than the Geisha.”

After answering, Segawa continued in a tone that suggested he understood what Mizuno was asking.

“But I didn’t choose them only to lower the price.”

“You chose them as a daily coffee?”

“Yes. I made it a flavor people can drink without thinking too much, in the middle of work or on the way home from shopping.”

It was also different from the blend at Yoshioka’s shop. Yoshioka made a flavor that would not disturb a fifteen-minute break. Segawa’s 500-yen cup looked like one that could reach people entering a specialty shop for the first time.

“The earlier Geisha is still the same.”

“I haven’t changed it. The beans, the price, or the way I serve it.”

“If you put out a cheaper coffee, doesn’t that become all people buy?”

“On some days.”

“Doesn’t that bother you?”

“It doesn’t bother me if someone drinks only the daily coffee and leaves.”

“Even if they never drink the Geisha?”

“If that’s what they want to drink.”

The answer was short.

Segawa had not given up the beans he wanted people to drink and changed the shop into a place for the 500-yen product. He had left the 1,000-yen Geisha untouched and was reaching people looking for those beans by another route.

“But for people who want rare beans, I made a different entrance.”

The notice Segawa indicated described a two-hour tasting session. Participants would compare small amounts of three coffees. Beneath the date, time, and reservation method were the names of two roasters.

“I’m announcing it together with roasters I know.”

“The people who referred the customer from Kyoto before?”

“One of them. They tell their customers about our tasting. I also refer people to them when they want to buy beans.”

“So instead of advertising the shop, you advertise the tasting?”

“If I only announce the location, the reason to come is weak.”

Even if the shop’s address was widely known, people looking for rare beans would not necessarily make the trip. Conversely, explaining farms and processing methods in detail to people passing nearby would not become an entrance if they only wanted an everyday cup.

The woman at the counter ordered more.

“Could we add one cup of the Panama next?”

“Yes. Will you share it?”

“Please.”

Segawa divided one cup between two small cups.

For the pair drinking rare beans, there was a set amount and time for comparing flavors. Mizuno’s 500-yen coffee, meanwhile, could be drunk without reading an explanation closely.

Segawa was not trying to gather every customer in the shop around the same product.

“I separated the entrances,” he said.

“For people nearby, there’s the sign outside. For people looking for unusual beans, there are the tastings and referrals from roasters.”

“It’s still the same shop.”

“It is.”

“And the customers aren’t fixed on one side or the other.”

“Someone who drinks the daily coffee may order the Geisha on another day.”

But he did not intend to require that of everyone.

“I stopped thinking that everyone had to drink the Geisha from the start.”

Mizuno took another sip of the 500-yen coffee. The temperature had fallen slightly, but the impression of the flavor had not changed much. For this cup, that was enough.

“Before, were you making one product do two jobs?”

“Two jobs?”

“A product people travel for, and a product people nearby drink every day.”

Segawa did not answer immediately.

At the counter, the couple were talking about the aroma of the Panama. The coffee in front of the woman with the laptop was the same 500-yen cup as Mizuno’s.

“Maybe I was,” Segawa said.

“I was trying to make one cup of Geisha both the shop’s sign and the everyday entrance.”

“That’s difficult.”

“Lowering the price of the beans wouldn’t necessarily make people in the neighborhood drink it. And if I changed it into a flavor for the neighborhood, it would stop meaning anything to the people who came looking for those beans.”

What Mizuno had asked before was whether Segawa should add products suited to the area. But what Segawa had protected was not only the price of the 1,000-yen beans. He had not diluted the reason to drink them into a product for the neighborhood.

“So you separated them.”

“Yes.”

“At first, I thought choosing good beans and brewing them properly was enough to run the shop.”

Segawa’s confidence in the beans he chose remained in his voice. He had not discarded that because it was wrong. There had simply been other work it did not cover.

“Making a good product and making it possible for the people who want it to come here were different things. If I want people nearby to come, I need a product that suits them too.”

“The work of bringing people in.”

“That’s right.”

It was not an answer Mizuno had taught him. After seeing the empty chairs and the people who passed without entering, Segawa had added products and entrances rather than changing the beans he wanted to drink.

Mizuno opened his notebook and wrote four words.

Quality

Price

Customer

Entrance

Before, he had thought that if a good product was given the correct price and there were customers who understood that price, it would sell.

But the existence of those customers somewhere and their ability to reach the shop were different things. Nor did everyone using the same shop necessarily seek the same satisfaction.

From “customer,” he drew two lines. Beside one, he wrote “everyday.” Beside the other, “destination.”

The everyday line led to the 500-yen coffee.

The destination line led to the 1,000-yen Geisha.

Both entered the same shop.

After Mizuno paid and went outside, a woman stopped at the 500-yen sign. She looked into the shop and opened the glass door. The bell rang.

At the same time, the couple from the counter came out. They walked away from the station, talking about the names of the beans they had just drunk.

They had used the same door.

The roads that brought them to the shop and what they carried away were different.

## Chapter 10: Where Does the Value Remain?

On Monday morning, Manager Kuroda entered the meeting room and immediately asked, “Can this be done in five minutes?”

The message Mizuno had sent said only:

I would like your opinion on the continuity of a small-scale business.

He had not prepared materials, but Saeki had made a simple table just before the meeting. The work that arose after a booklet sold was listed on the left, and Kubo’s proposed changes on the right.

Kuroda looked at the amount of paper.

“Doesn’t look like five minutes.”

“Sorry.”

“What’s a zine?”

“A small booklet made by an individual,” Saeki explained.

“This maker writes the pieces and also handles the printing and sales himself.”

“What does that have to do with our work?”

He was not reprimanding them. Kuroda wanted to know the use of the discussion before listening to it.

“We don’t know yet whether it does,” Mizuno said.

“But I kept thinking about the fact that selling more made it harder for him to write the next one.”

“Selling made him unable to write?”

“He had more orders to check, more printing, binding, packing, and shipping. Each copy costs 300 yen, so it’s easy to try even if you don’t know the writer. In exchange, every copy sold adds to his own work.”

“It sold because it was cheap.”

“I don’t think the price was the only reason. But it was important as an entrance.”

“He does all of it alone?”

“For now.”

Kuroda continued reading down the left side of the table. “What does he want to do?”

“He says he wants to write.”

“So the work of selling is eating the time for writing.”

After coming home from work, Kubo processed the orders. Only after that day’s shipping and binding were done did he try to write. On days when he managed to begin, it was around eleven at night.

“If it doesn’t sell, that’s a problem. If it sells, he can’t write. Either way, he runs out of the next product.”

“Sales are consuming his production capacity,” Saeki said.

“Revenue increases while the capacity to create value decreases.”

“What about profit?”

Mizuno could not answer Kuroda’s question.

“I didn’t ask for exact numbers.”

“You can’t know whether it will continue without looking at that. Sell one copy, subtract the paper, printing, fees, and shipping. How much remains? Add his time and it gets smaller again.”

“Yes.”

“I’m not saying 300 yen is bad. If there’s a system that makes a profit at 300 yen, that’s fine. But if he sends one 300-yen product every day, one copy at a time, the time won’t add up.”

The first thing Kuroda checked was not the reputation of the booklet or the quality of the writing. After one copy sold, how did money and time move? As a result, could the next copy be made?

“He decided to batch shipping twice a week,” Mizuno said.

“That’s good.”

“He’ll standardize the binding method and page count. Sell previous issues as a set. Center sales on events. There’s also a proposal to set the release date only after the text is complete.”

“Did he think of those?”

“Yes.”

“A person knows his own work best. The dangerous thing is looking from outside and thinking you understand all of it.”

Mizuno had been able to see that Kubo was losing time. But Kubo knew better which tasks could be combined and what speed would feel to readers like being kept waiting.

“What is bothering you, Mizuno?”

Mizuno read the two lines he had written the day before.

There is still room in the customer’s payment.

The provider’s time is pressed against the upper limit.

“That it can’t continue if only the buyer has it easy.”

“Obviously.”

“Yes. But I think I had assumed that the more you gave the buyer beyond the price, the better the business became.”

“‘Give more’ is vague.”

“Have them receive more value than the amount they paid.”

“Who pays for the difference?”

Mizuno had no answer.

“Improve the materials. Add more work. Keep the price down. The customer may be pleased. But if the company or the people doing the work bear that difference, it won’t last.”

“In Kubo’s case, it’s his time,” Saeki said.

“Right. If the more pleased the customer is at 300 yen, the less he can sleep, that isn’t surplus. You only moved it somewhere else.”

The room left on the customer’s side was being taken from the provider’s side. The total amount of room had not increased. Only the location of the burden had changed.

“Then where should the value come from?”

“You’re asking me that?”

“As an opinion.”

“Depends on the business. Some businesses use equipment. Some depend on procurement. Some sell a person’s skill.”

Kuroda did not try to give them an answer that applied everywhere.

Saeki placed *Between Transfers* on the table. It was Kubo’s booklet, which she had borrowed from Mizuno earlier.

“Where is the value in this booklet?”

“I haven’t read it. I don’t know,” Kuroda answered immediately.

“Mizuno?” Saeki asked.

Mizuno looked at the booklet.

“The writing.”

“Not the paper?”

“The paper is necessary, but I didn’t buy it because it was that paper.”

“The staples?”

“They only need to hold while I’m reading.”

“The clear bag?”

“I wouldn’t have trouble without it.”

“Then the center that creates value is Kubo’s ability to write.”

Observing. Putting things into words. Shaping them into short pieces. What had remained after Mizuno paid 300 yen had not come from the whiteness of the paper or the transparency of the bag.

“Does that ability decrease when one copy sells?”

Paper, ink, and envelopes decreased. Shipping took time. But the ability to write did not pass to the reader and disappear from Kubo.

“No. If he writes, it may even grow.”

“The experience of writing remains. So does learning readers’ responses and thinking about the next expression,” Saeki continued.

Kuroda read several pages of the booklet.

“It’s good if the source of the value gets stronger every time he sells.”

“The source of the value,” Mizuno repeated.

“You could call it the cause that produces value,” Saeki said.

In an empty section of the table, she made two columns.

What remains inside after delivery.

Writing skill. Observation. Editing methods. Understanding readers. Trust in previous issues.

What is consumed outside with each delivery.

Paper. Ink. Envelopes. Shipping. Sales fees. Packing time.

“I don’t think there are many businesses where nothing is consumed outside. Products need materials and logistics. Coffee uses beans. Even rakugo uses venue fees and travel time.”

“The difference is how much of what produces the value remains for the next time?” Mizuno asked.

“Yes.”

“By inside, do you mean inside the company?” Kuroda asked.

“Not only the company. It can mean an individual or a team.”

“What about equipment?”

“If you own it and can use it next time, it’s close to something that remains inside. But if nothing can be done without the equipment, there is also dependence on it.”

“You should separate that.”

Saeki added the headings “Accumulation” and “Consumption” to the two columns.

If Kubo could secure time to write, new pieces would be created, and the experience would remain with him. If his readers increased, trust in his name and earlier issues would build as well. The next time he released a booklet, he would no longer be a completely unknown writer.

On the other hand, time spent shipping and binding did not necessarily lead to the next piece. If it only increased the same work, the more he sold, the less time he had to write.

“If more remains inside, is it easier to continue?”

“I think it’s one condition,” Saeki answered.

“But it won’t continue for that reason alone,” Kuroda said before she could continue.

“There are jobs where the skill improves but no money remains. Without demand, whatever remains inside won’t make it a business.”

At the edge of the table, Saeki added:

Check separately from profit and demand

“Better not to explain everything with one number. But it can be useful as a place to look.”

Kuroda’s words did not reject the table. But neither did he agree that a neat classification was enough to make a business move.

“Can it be a ratio?” Mizuno asked.

“An exact number would be difficult.”

“But as a concept, there is a ratio?”

“I think there is.”

Saeki wrote at the top of the table:

Internal asset ratio

“A working name.”

“Another long phrase.”

“Shortening it creates more misunderstandings.”

When Kuroda checked the time, nearly twenty minutes had passed since the meeting began.

“Five minutes was impossible.”

“Sorry.”

“If Kubo wants to continue at 300 yen, he has to build a way of selling at 300 yen. Not fill the discount with his own time.”

Before standing, Kuroda pushed the table back toward Mizuno.

“After you sell, watch what remains.”

“For the customer?”

“For both.”

When the meeting-room door opened, the sounds of office phones and keyboards returned. Kuroda went back to his desk and immediately began another call.

Mizuno compared the booklet with the two columns and wrote in his notebook:

Value remains with the customer.

The source that creates value remains with the provider.

Below that, he added:

Internal asset ratio

The sound of the air conditioner remained in the meeting room, and Kuroda’s voice could be heard beyond the door. Even if something accumulated inside, profit and demand would not follow automatically.

Outside the two columns, other conditions for continuing the business still remained.

## Chapter 9: After It Sold for 300 Yen

Kubo’s email arrived about a month after the zine fair.

The subject line was short.

About *Between Transfers*

Mizuno opened it during lunch. After thanking him for buying the earlier booklet, Kubo wrote that he had printed more copies and begun selling online.

Only the final two lines did not follow smoothly from what came before.

Thanks to that, more people are reading it than before.

But I’m having trouble writing the next one.

It was not that he could not write because it had failed to sell. Because it had sold, he could not write the next one.

Mizuno read the email again from the beginning.

At the end, Kubo mentioned that he would be taking part in a small sales event nearby. Mizuno replied, “I’ll come by that day.”

The venue was a small event space on the second floor of a used-book store. Six tables lined the walls, with a single aisle through the center wide enough for visitors to pass one another.

When Mizuno arrived, three customers were standing in front of Kubo’s table.

A new booklet was stacked beside *Between Transfers*. Its title was *Before the Doors Close*. Like the first, it was made from white paper with a train door drawn in black lines. The price was still 300 yen.

Kubo handed a booklet to the first customer, accepted a 1,000-yen bill from another, and returned the change. In the middle of that, the third customer spoke to him.

“I bought the previous booklet online.”

“Thank you.”

“Will you put this one online too?”

“That’s the plan.”

“When?”

“By sometime next week.”

There was a slight pause before the answer. The customer did not seem to notice and picked up a copy of the new booklet.

Mizuno waited a short distance away.

There were more things on Kubo’s table than there had been at the first event. A tin of change. Clear bags. Tape. Envelopes. A sheet for writing addresses. A guide explaining the shipping methods. Two cardboard boxes sat under the table.

When the customers cleared, Kubo noticed Mizuno.

“You came.”

“I was wondering about your email.”

“Sorry. I wrote something strange.”

Kubo offered him the folding chair behind the table, and Mizuno sat beside him.

“You’re selling more.”

“More than before. After the first event, someone introduced it, and orders started coming in little by little.”

“That’s good.”

“It is.”

The answer came quickly. It did not seem that Kubo was unhappy about it.

“I think making it 300 yen was the right decision too.”

“It’s hard to pay 1,000 yen from the start for writing by someone you don’t know.”

“That hasn’t changed.”

The online order list Kubo showed him contained order numbers, quantities, and shipping status.

“One copy is 300 yen. Even with shipping, I think it’s an amount people can pay to try it.”

“And yet you can’t write?”

“The work of selling has increased.”

A new customer approached the table and asked about the difference between the first booklet and the new one. Kubo explained the contents, and the customer bought both.

“That kind of thing,” Kubo said.

“At an event, it’s still easy to understand. I can talk here and hand it over on the spot.”

“Online is different?”

“Each time one copy is ordered, I check the payment and address, put it in an envelope, write the address, and mail it. Then I send a shipping notice.”

“One at a time?”

“For now.”

“Why not send them in batches?”

“When an order comes in, I want to send it quickly.”

Only there did Kubo correct himself slightly.

“Not because it’s a 300-yen booklet. When someone buys it because they want to read it, I don’t like making them wait for days.”

It was not simply excessive service for a cheap product. When an order arrived, he wanted to place the booklet in the reader’s hands at once. For Kubo, that speed seemed to be part of selling the booklet.

“Do you bind them yourself too?”

“Yes. I print them, fold them, put the pages in order, and staple them down the center.”

“How many at a time?”

“Twenty at first. Now fifty.”

“You increased it.”

“When I make fifty, I worry they’ll be left over. If I make twenty, I have to make more every time they run out.”

A single copy was thin and light. At fifty copies, they became a mass of paper beneath the table.

“I get more inquiries too. It hasn’t arrived yet. I wrote the wrong address. I meant to order two but ordered one. Can I buy the previous booklet at the same time?”

“You answer all of those yourself?”

“There’s no one else.”

Several unread markers remained on the smartphone at the edge of the table.

“When I get home from work, I check the orders.”

“When do you write?”

“After that.”

“Around what time?”

“If I can start, about eleven.”

“If you can start?”

“Some days I print. Some days I run out of bags and have to go buy them.”

When their conversation stopped, the sound of hard book covers touching came from the used-book store below. Elsewhere in the event space, another exhibitor was explaining a booklet to a customer.

“I started because I wanted to write,” Kubo said.

“But the more it sells, the more work there is before I can write.”

There was a thin cut along the side of one finger, as if from paper.

“What if you raised the price?”

As soon as he said it, Mizuno thought he had reached for an answer too quickly.

Kubo did not reject the idea.

“I’ve thought about it.”

“Why not raise it?”

“I don’t know whether people who buy it for 300 yen would buy it for 500. And I still think the reason I chose the price was right.”

It was hard to pay a large amount from the start for writing by someone unknown. In fact, some people had picked it up because it cost 300 yen.

Selling more copies had not changed the role of the booklet.

“It isn’t that 300 yen is wrong,” Kubo said, choosing his words.

“I think I just haven’t learned how to sell it for 300 yen yet.”

Mizuno opened his notebook and asked Kubo to list everything he did after one booklet sold, starting from the beginning. Checking the payment and address. Packing. Addressing. Sending a shipping notice. Answering inquiries. Checking stock. When the stock ran low, buying paper, printing, arranging the pages, folding, and stapling. Events also meant applications, participation fees, transport, change, announcements, sales records, and carrying unsold copies home. The list grew to nearly twenty items. “Write” was not among them.

A customer came to the table. Kubo handed over a copy of the new booklet, and 300 yen went into the tin. After the sound of the coins disappeared, Mizuno asked, “Other than raising the price, is there anything you could reduce?”

Shipping came first. Instead of every day, he could batch it twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. Kubo resisted: “Won’t people think that’s slow?” But if the shipping days were clear at the time of purchase, perhaps they would not feel they had been kept waiting. He changed the note on his phone.

For binding, the first booklet had twenty pages and the new one twenty-four. From the next issue, he would use a fixed length. He would not force the writing to fit. He would decide the overall size of the booklet first so he could reuse the same white cover and printing settings.

He would set the release date only after finishing the text. Without an external deadline, his writing might slow down. But it was still better than carrying unfinished writing, the cover, and the announcement at the same time.

Sales would center more on events, but he would not stop selling online. Kubo wanted people far away to read him too. He would sell the two existing booklets as a 600-yen set so the envelope and shipping could be combined.

Mizuno made another column beside the list.

Do not ship every day.

Fix the page count.

Use the same printing and binding method.

Release after the text is complete.

Center sales on events.

Sell existing issues together.

Most of the items now listed as improvements had been chosen by Kubo himself. All Mizuno had done was place the scattered work on the same sheet of paper and ask what he could let go.

“This might make things a little different even at 300 yen.”

“Can you change them right away?”

“I’ll change the shipping days today. The page count from the next one. The set after I count the stock.”

Not everything could be changed easily. But to recover time for writing, it seemed possible to let go, just a little, of immediate shipping and deadlines imposed from outside.

Footsteps climbed the stairs, and another customer entered the room.

“Is this the kind of work you do?” Kubo asked.

“No.”

“Process improvement at your company?”

“Product planning and sales support,” Mizuno answered. “Lately, I’ve just been thinking about what happens after something is bought.”

“After it’s bought?”

Mizuno told him about the day he bought *Between Transfers*. How he had continued receiving something from the writing after paying 300 yen. How the payment meter had room left, while the experience meter moved far.

“Then pricing it at 300 yen did have meaning.”

“I think it did.”

The reason Kubo wanted to keep the price at 300 yen was not only to reduce the customer’s resistance to paying. Readers who had never known him had opened his writing to try it. His wish to continue online sales came from the same place.

“But even if there’s room left on the buyer’s side, it won’t continue if there’s none left on the maker’s side.”

Kubo looked at the booklets on the table. About ten copies of the new one remained.

“If I can’t write the next one, I won’t have anything to sell.”

The event was nearing its closing time, and the exhibitors around them began packing. Clear bags and coins for change were put away. Cardboard boxes were reassembled.

Kubo counted seven copies of the first booklet and eleven of the new one.

Before leaving, Mizuno said, “I’ll take one of the new ones.”

“Thank you.”

Kubo picked up *Before the Doors Close* and started to put it in a clear bag.

“I don’t need the bag.”

Kubo returned it to the table.

Mizuno paid 300 yen.

That night, he opened the new booklet on the train home.

The same paper. The same printing. The same size. It felt the same in his hands.

The writing was new.

After the second piece, Mizuno closed the booklet. He opened the list of Kubo’s tasks in his notebook and wrote beneath it:

There is still room in the customer’s payment.

The provider’s time is pressed against the upper limit.

After hesitating briefly, he added another line.

Room on the customer’s side alone is not enough for it to continue.

When the train entered a tunnel, the running noise between the wheels and the walls suddenly grew louder.

The sound was not clipping.

But while it lasted, none of the other small sounds could be heard.

## Chapter 8: Watch the Customer. Do Not Let the Customer Decide.

When Mizuno closed his notebook, he spotted Asanoya Ichifune beside the reception desk.

Several audience members still remained around Ichifune after the performance. A man who had sat in the front row repeated part of the story. Ichifune replied briefly, and a small laugh rose again among the people around them.

“Do you want to talk to him?” Saeki asked.

Mizuno nodded.

“I want to ask about the audience just now.”

“Then go ask.”

“He only just finished. Won’t it sound like a strange question?”

“I think you’ll be all right if you don’t show him the recorder’s meters.”

They waited until the last audience member moved away, then approached Ichifune.

“Thank you for today.”

“Thank you. You laughed a lot.”

“Can I ask you one thing?”

“As long as it isn’t difficult.”

Ichifune laughed.

What Mizuno wanted to ask about was not the size of the laughter itself. Ichifune waited while the voices in the audience remained, then moved the story forward once the room grew quiet. How much did he adjust that speed to the audience?

“Do you change the story every time while watching the audience’s reaction?”

“What do you mean by change?”

“If there aren’t many laughs, do you add something else? If it doesn’t seem to be getting a response, do you switch to a different story?”

“I sometimes add things. But I almost never switch to another story once I’ve started.”

“You are watching the audience.”

“Of course. You can’t do it without watching.”

The audience that day had responded vocally from the beginning, he said. If the laughter lasted, he waited. If the response was small, he moved a little faster. Even with the same story, the speed was not exactly the same each time.

“If the audience is quiet, do you add an explanation that’s easier to understand?”

“Sometimes. If I think it isn’t reaching them, I add one more line, then another.”

“Does that make it reach them?”

“Sometimes. But if I get scared and add too much, the story can get heavy.”

Ichifune’s answer was less organized than Mizuno had expected.

It was not a matter of watching the audience and therefore adjusting correctly. When the response was small, Ichifune also became uneasy, and that uneasiness could slow the story down.

“When they aren’t laughing, doesn’t it look as though they aren’t listening?”

“Sometimes. But some people listen quietly.”

“How can you tell the difference?”

“Whether they’re leaning forward, looking away, waiting for the next line. I watch their bodies, not only their faces.”

“And then you know?”

“Sometimes I don’t,” Ichifune answered at once. “Some days, someone speaks to me afterward and I find out it reached them. Some days, I go home without finding out.”

Mizuno asked one more question. “Do you choose stories the audience is likely to laugh at?”

“Only stories they’re likely to laugh at, you mean?”

“Or change to something you think that day’s audience will like.”

“Of course I want them to laugh. If it gets no response, I feel bad like anyone else.”

It was not that Ichifune had no desire for laughter. He was not someone who could remain unaffected when the audience gave him nothing.

“When it doesn’t get a response, I want to run toward an easier laugh. Sometimes I want to say things I don’t need to say.”

“But you still don’t switch to another story midway?”

“I don’t.”

Only that answer came quickly.

“I go up there having decided to tell this story. I change the timing and the way I say things so it reaches the people there that day. I may add an explanation. But if I escape into another story halfway through, I’ll leave behind the people who have appeared up to that point.”

“The characters in the story?”

“Yes. I tell it because I want the audience to see where those people go, all the way to the end.”

For Ichifune, what he protected by not changing was not a “delivery process.” He did not want to abandon the people he had brought onto the stage. That was why he watched the audience and looked for a form that would reach them.

“Is adjusting to the audience different from letting the audience decide?”

Ichifune thought for a moment before answering Mizuno.

“I don’t know if it’s anything as grand as that. The customers came to see me perform. I have a story I want them to see. I’m the one who has to think about how to connect the two.”

“Don’t you get anxious when the room is quiet?”

“I do. Every time.”

“You don’t know whether you chose the right story either?”

“I don’t know until it’s over. Even so, I have to decide and go up there. I can’t ask the audience, ‘What should I do next?’ just because I’m anxious.”

Someone called for Ichifune from beyond the reception area.

“Excuse me. We have to clear the room.”

Mizuno and Saeki thanked him, and Ichifune went back toward the audience area.

As they walked toward the station after leaving the building, Saeki said, “That may be the same at work.”

“Watching the customer’s reaction and letting the customer decide the entire method of delivery?”

“Yes.”

At the company, they were told to listen to customers. They were also told to respond to as many requests as possible. Mizuno had grouped both under customer orientation.

“If you refuse a request, people say you aren’t customer-oriented.”

“Depends on what you refuse. You need to see what the customer is having trouble with. But the customer doesn’t necessarily know the best way to solve it.”

Yoshioka’s shop came to Mizuno.

Yoshioka watched when customers were tired, refilled their water, and let them sit without rushing them. At the same time, he did not expand the menu even when customers asked. If he accepted every order, he would no longer be able to run the shop alone, and even the short break he wanted to give them would break down.

“Yoshioka watched the customers too. But he didn’t take every order they asked for.”

“He must have kept part of the decision in the hands of the person running the shop.”

“And Ichifune changes his timing and delivery. But he doesn’t abandon the story halfway through.”

Saeki thought for a moment.

“You could say he retains control of the variables the provider can manage.”

“Variables?”

“Delivery time. Number of products. Process. Quality. Price. Things the provider can decide. If all of those change for every customer, it becomes impossible to repeat the same quality.”

The people in Ichifune’s story had become process and quality inside Saeki’s words. She was not wrong. But they had become something slightly different.

“Watch the customer. Don’t let the customer decide.”

Mizuno shortened Ichifune’s point.

“Customer orientation and customer control of the delivery process are different.”

“Control sounds strong.”

“Then regulation.”

“Even stronger.”

“Leadership.”

That word was a little closer.

Watch the audience. Listen to how long they laugh. Adjust so the story reaches the people there that day. But Ichifune decides which story to tell and how far to take the characters.

“Provider-led?”

“On its own, that sounds as though the customer is being ignored.”

“You watch the customer’s condition. But the provider keeps the main variables of delivery.”

“Provider-led variable control, perhaps.”

“That’s long.”

“It’s still a working name.”

The next morning, Saeki placed a sheet of paper on Mizuno’s desk.

At the top it said:

Observe the customer’s condition, reactions, and problems.

The provider retains leadership over the content, process, and quality control of delivery.

Below that was written:

Working name: Provider-led variable control

The lower half of the page was divided into two columns: “What to observe” and “What the provider decides.”

What to observe included the audience’s concentration, the length of laughter, customer fatigue, and reactions to waiting time.

What the provider decides included the piece, the center of the story, the number of menu items, the order of service, and the process.

“I put Ichifune’s story and Yoshioka’s shop side by side,” Saeki said.

“It may apply to Segawa’s shop too. He doesn’t need to change the beans for every customer. But he does need to see who is coming.”

“Watching the customer and doing what the customer says are different.”

“Yes.”

“But provider leadership without watching the customer is different too.”

“That’s just self-righteousness.”

Mizuno opened his notebook.

The previous page held the word “headroom.” On the next line he wrote:

Watch the customer. Do not let the customer decide.

Then he added Saeki’s working name.

Provider-led variable control.

Seen only as words, it was far from Ichifune’s stage. The fact that he felt bad when he got no response and did not want to leave his characters behind halfway through did not fit into Saeki’s two columns.

But the form remained: caring about the customer was not the same as handing all judgment over to the customer.

Mizuno circled the word “led.”

Caring for the customer meant there were things that could not be left to the customer.

It sounded right, but used incorrectly, it could also become self-righteousness.

Ichifune’s words, “I’m anxious every time,” remained outside the circle.

Interest notes / Seeds of Semi-Sci-Fi Curiosity

The demon had grown bored of abducting women from the village, so he went to Tokyo.

He had heard there were prettier women in Minato Ward.

The demon abducted women from Minato Ward, and if they had husbands, he ate those men.

Then he took the women back to his island.

The people of the village heard the terrifying rumors spreading through Tokyo, but still celebrated the safety that had come to them.

As for the demon, he was blessed with many children.

Eventually, he decided to move.

Since old times, it has been the nature of demons to live at the edge of human settlements.

Minato Ward was too glittery, and somehow he hated it.

So, with no better choice, he made a suitable landfill in the Tokyo Bay area of Koto Ward and turned it into his home.

Onigashima TOKYO.

There, the abducted Minato girls served the demon every day, and the children grew up.

One day, the demon suddenly felt something was off.

The children’s faces seemed, somehow, different.

It was not that they were ugly because they had little mini-horns like the demon.

The mini-horns were actually kind of cute.

The problem was that their eyes, their nose bridges, and things like that did not look at all like the type of women he had abducted.

At first, the demon thought some other children from around Chuo Ward had come to play on the island.

But that was impossible.

The island was cut off from the world, and almost nobody came except Uber Eats delivery guys.

Though, of course, the food was the Uber Eats guy himself.

Come to think of it, the Minato girls, who used to be beautiful, also seemed to have different faces lately.

For simply getting older, every part of their bodies had become much too saggy and slack.

It was not fat.

It was the skin-feeling that was saggy and slack.

The demon asked the Minato girls.

“Why do the children’s faces not look like ours? And before that, why have even you become so saggy and slack?”

The Minato girls suddenly looked at him with eyes full of hatred and said,

“It’s because you won’t let us leave this island!!”

“Give it back!”

“Give back my doll-like body!”

“You broke it!”

“You brooooke it!”

The demon felt an extraordinary pressure.

At that moment, the skin of the Minato girls suddenly began melting into sludge, and in wax-doll forms they surrounded the demon.

The demon, terrified, ran and tried to escape toward Chuo Ward.

The wax dolls chased him.

A silicone-like liquid spilling from their melting skin glossed the ground.

From some of their eyelids and noses, things like thread and string, things like metal, were poking out.

The island’s center of gravity suddenly leaned toward Chuo Ward.

Cracks ran through the weak foundation of the landfill.

The children, thinking it was fun and knowing nothing, were running around excitedly.

The demon told them not to run around.

But it was already too late.

The island collapsed and sank into Tokyo Bay.

The demon was heavy, so he sank at once.

The wax dolls thought they would be saved because the collagen and hyaluronic acid all over their bodies floated on the water, but because they were water-soluble, they dissolved into scraps of the sea.

Only the children were floating on the water, and they were safely rescued by a passing ship.

They are orphans now, but they go to school with the other children of the world while working part-time jobs.

One of the children says this:

“I want to grow up fast, work properly, make money, and get plastic surgery. First, maybe I’ll have my horns removed.”

『The Hand Soap in the Kitchen』

In a kitchen where I live alone, the scent of new hand soap brings back a crowded family table and the air after someone’s bath, almost thirty years ago. For a moment, an old household returns to the present.

###

I have been living alone, a man by himself, for over five years now.

I wake up early in the morning, head to work, come home sometime between seven and eight at night, eat with no one there, take a bath, and sleep.

This life, the kind that probably will not change much from here on.

Recently, a bright, and nostalgic, element was added to that room of mine.

When I put it that way, the usual guess would be that spring has finally come for me, or that I have brought in some cute dog or cat as a pet.

But this time, that thing stays in a much more practical, much more plain place.

When I get home, the very first thing I do is touch it.

Hand soap.

Recently, the hand soap in my kitchen ran out, so I bought a refill pack at a nearby 100-yen shop.

After I refilled the bottle, I immediately gave it one push, two pushes, and washed my hands to try it out.

At that moment, memories flashed back of going to my cousin’s house during elementary school summer vacations, winter breaks, and spring breaks.

And quite clearly too. I remembered the time around one or two hours after dinner at my cousin’s house, when my uncle, my aunt, my grandmother, their three daughters, and then me, my mother, and my older sister, about nine of us, had eaten dinner together.

After dinner, because that cousin’s house was a very large old house, with even a detached building, everyone would scatter off into their own rooms.

My family, the branch side, would stay in the room where we had eaten, together with my grandmother, watching nighttime variety shows and things like that. And always around then, one of my older girl cousins would cross in front of the TV to go take a bath.

Then, after several dozen minutes, she would cross in front of the TV again, wiping her wet hair with a towel.

At that time, I had no idea what ingredient it was, but I think it was probably the shampoo used only by that older cousin.

That scent would float out and fill the after-dinner living room.

That scent is the same as the hand soap in the kitchen where I live now, almost thirty years later.

I come home from work and wash my hands.

Each time, I remember things like how we once sat around the table, nine or ten of us, and how after my older cousin got out of the bath, everyone would yield to each other about who should go next, saying that if someone did not hurry, we would have to reheat the bath water again, so anyone is fine, just hurry up and get in—those kinds of scenes.

The Work

Stag Beetle: ...

Cockroach: Why?

Stag Beetle: What’s wrong?

Cockroach: You and I are both brown insects.

Stag Beetle: We are.

Cockroach: Then why are you the only one people love?

Stag Beetle: I don’t know.

Cockroach: You’re always out in the forest at night.

Stag Beetle: I only want the tree sap.

Cockroach: I go out of my way to visit people’s homes.

Stag Beetle: Right.

Cockroach: And you hardly ever run.

Stag Beetle: Rushing only wears you out.

Cockroach: I’m always sprinting at full speed.

Stag Beetle: Maybe that’s the problem?

Cockroach: What is?

Stag Beetle: Nothing.

“Sometimes it is not how hard you try, but how you approach people, that makes them dislike you.”

## Chapter 7: The Peak of Laughter

Saeki was the one who suggested going to a rakugo show.

When Mizuno returned from the kitchenette during lunch, a flyer for a local performance was lying on his desk. The date was printed in red, and the performers’ names were listed vertically beneath it.

“Did you put this here, Saeki?”

“A client gave it to me,” Saeki answered without looking away from her monitor. “Do you like rakugo?”

“I don’t know much about it. But I’m free that day.”

“Does that mean I’m going too?”

“You like listening to sound. Wouldn’t it be interesting to record people laughing?”

Mizuno read the bottom of the flyer.

Photography and audio recording are prohibited inside the venue.

“Recording’s prohibited.”

“You’re right.”

“Then I’ve got no reason to go.”

“You could just listen normally,” Saeki said, then returned to work.

Mizuno placed the flyer at the edge of his desk. He did not throw it away when he left, and it stayed in a pocket of his bag until the date of the performance.

The venue was an old two-story building on a street one block away from the shopping arcade. The performers’ names were written beside the entrance in thick, stylized rakugo lettering. Even thirty minutes before the show, about ten people were already lined up.

“More people than I expected,” Saeki said.

“Maybe there are a lot of regulars.”

“Did you bring your recorder?”

“I did, but I’m not taking it out of the bag.”

Instead of inside his jacket, it was at the bottom of his bag that day. There had been no need to bring it, but out of habit he had put it in with the rest of his things before leaving home.

At opening time, the wooden door was unlocked, and they paid the admission fee at the reception desk.

At the front of the room, which held fewer than one hundred seats, there was a low stage, a cushion, and a small reading stand. That was all the scenery. Mizuno and Saeki sat slightly behind the center.

The audience included elderly couples, men and women who looked as though they had come after work, and younger people alone. In the front row, people who seemed to know one another exchanged greetings. Candy wrappers rubbed together. Coins dropped into a box at reception. As more people entered, conversation, throat-clearing, jackets being removed, and programs opening overlapped, creating a single field of sound before the performance had even begun.

Mizuno almost reached for his bag, then returned his hand to his knee.

Without a recording, any sound he missed would not remain. Perhaps because of that restriction, even smaller sounds felt closer than usual.

At the scheduled time, the house lights dimmed slightly. Conversation receded, and the flute and drum of the entrance music began. The sound system did not seem new. The sound was a little hard and did not spread far, but it was enough to turn the whole audience toward the stage.

The opening performer bowed and sat on the cushion.

A small laugh came from the front row at his first words. One person let out a short breath, and the laughter spread around them a little later. Some people moved only their shoulders without making a sound.

When the storyteller stopped speaking, the audience waited for what came next. At times, the silence gathered the attention of an audience of fewer than one hundred more completely than the speaking did. The moment the next line was placed, laughter rose and disappeared shortly afterward.

The recorder display appeared in Mizuno’s mind.

Small sounds continued. A pause formed. Then the volume jumped. Laughter also had a beginning, a length, and a way of disappearing.

When the opening performer left the stage, applause spread through the room. It was loud but did not last long. By the time the next entrance music began, the audience was quiet again.

The second storyteller spoke more slowly than the opening performer. His voice was only loud enough to reach the back, not especially forceful. But whenever he turned his face, the position of the voice changed with it, and it sounded as though one person stood on the right and another on the left.

There were no props or scenery, yet a room and a street appeared inside Mizuno, with two people facing each other.

Saeki laughed beside him. It was a short, slightly high sound he never heard in the office.

Mizuno did not turn toward her. He listened as her laugh joined the laughter spreading from the front. The sound passed through the center, swelled toward the back a moment later, and disappeared before the next words arrived.

After an intermission, Asanoya Ichifune came onto the stage last.

His name had been printed larger than the others at the bottom of the flyer. When he bowed in front of the cushion, the applause lasted longer than it had for the first two performers.

Ichifune sat down and looked across the audience. He did not begin immediately. He waited until someone in the front row adjusted their seat and someone else swallowed a cough, then opened his mouth.

He began with a construction site he had seen on the way to the venue.

An elderly woman asked a security guard holding a traffic baton for directions. When Ichifune imitated the guard’s reply, several people laughed. The laughter spread a little when the woman asked again. On the third exchange, altered only slightly, the whole room finally moved.

He did not try to push the first small response wider with extra words. Without breaking the shape of the exchange, he moved down the same road a little at a time until the audience could see the guard and the woman.

When the laughter grew, Ichifune did not place the next line over it. He waited. Just before it disappeared completely, while some of it still remained in the room, he set down another line. A different laugh began and spread as if following the previous sound.

He was not raising his voice or adding more explanation. He seemed to be measuring where each line would reach the audience and placing them one at a time.

When the story entered its main section, the stage changed into a cramped row house.

In reality, there were only Ichifune and the cushion. But every change in the angle of his face or the tone of his voice added another person: a landlord, a tenant, a man from the neighborhood, a strong-willed wife. Ichifune had only one body, but there were many people in the room.

After a large laugh, the story suddenly entered a quiet place.

As one of the characters, Ichifune placed a short phrase in a small voice. The audience that had been laughing stopped moving, and somewhere someone drew a breath.

For just a moment, the character they had been hearing as part of the joke looked like a lonely person.

Ichifune did not hurry to fill that quiet with laughter. When he moved to the next line, the character recovered his foolishness, and the audience laughed again. But it was not the same laugh as before. The loneliness they had just seen remained alongside the humor.

Again and again, Mizuno watched a meter in his mind.

Ichifune’s voice was not pressed against the upper limit, and the room was not constantly in an uproar. A quiet followed a small laugh. Surprise or another feeling emerged from it, and then the room returned to louder laughter.

There was still a range in which the audience’s feelings could move.

As the story approached its end, the words came slightly faster. Characters who had occupied separate places gathered in one location, and pieces of the story that had been set apart overlapped in a short span of time.

Ichifune delivered the final line.

The audience’s laughter rose all at once.

There was no front or back. It became one large sound and struck the ceiling. In Mizuno’s mind, the meter jumped close to the red line.

The laughter did not settle immediately.

Ichifune added nothing. He remained seated and waited. Eventually the laughter became applause. When he lowered his head, the applause grew louder still.

Mizuno clapped too. There was a lightness around his chest that had not been there when he arrived.

His problems had not been solved, and his work had not decreased. But it was not simply that he had forgotten them while laughing. Something remained that he felt he might be able to carry home after leaving the room.

After the show, the audience stood without rushing. People in the front row who seemed to be regulars discussed the stories where they were.

Saeki put the program in her bag.

“That was interesting.”

“Yeah.”

“From about halfway through, you were laughing with a difficult expression.”

“Which was it?”

“You looked like you were measuring something.”

They followed the flow of people into the hallway.

A little away from the others, Mizuno checked the stub of his admission ticket.

He had paid before entering the room. The amount had not made him hesitate. He had not thought it was high, and he had not chosen the event because it was cheap.

At that price, he could try it once.

That had been about the extent of his decision.

Now, however, he was trying to take home not only laughter but long silences, sympathy for people he had never met, and words that might remain with him on the way home.

“Is it like the 300-yen zine?” Saeki asked.

“In some ways.”

“Consumer surplus?”

“That’s part of it, I think.”

They followed the other customers down to the first-floor lobby. Beyond the glass doors, signs outside restaurants were lighting up, and a bicycle passed in front of the entrance.

Mizuno took the recorder from his bag.

“You didn’t record anything, did you?”

“I didn’t.”

He turned on only the power. Two level meters appeared on the dark display. The green bars moved low in response to the sound of cars outside.

“When you record, you leave room at the top so a sudden loud sound won’t be crushed.”

“The thing you were talking about in the shopping arcade?”

“Right.”

Mizuno pointed to the upper part of the meter.

“The range left here is called headroom.”

“Headroom,” Saeki repeated.

“A room above your head?”

“I suppose that’s what it would mean literally.”

Mizuno turned off the power. The screen went dark, but the way the laughter had moved remained with him.

“Paying felt close to that.”

“There was room left in the admission fee?”

“Yeah. When I paid, the meter didn’t swing all the way to the top.”

Upstairs, the audience area was being cleared. The faint sound of chairs moving reached them from the stairway.

“But the experience nearly reached the peak at the end.”

Saeki did not answer immediately.

Several people heading toward the exit passed beside them. One imitated a line from Ichifune, and the other two laughed again.

The performance was over, but the laughter was still moving among the audience.

Mizuno opened his notebook beside the lobby wall.

The payment meter still has headroom.

And yet the experience meter moved that far.

Below it, he wrote a single word.

Headroom

Giving it a name did not tell him what the word could be used for.

Something that had remained without taking shape since the night he finished the 300-yen booklet had finally fit inside a word.
